Tire Tread forensics for Visual Trackers
This excellent but expensive book "Tire Tread and Tire Track Evidence: Recovery and Forensic Examination" by William Bodziak is a required text for the visual trackers library. Throughout the world and specifically in the United States there are millions of vehicles in operation providing societies with the convenience of mobility for pleasure, work, warfare and criminal activity. In the visual tracking community this is an often overlooked skill set as most tracking operations will start from a vehicle debarking point or end a leg of the follow-up at a vehicle embarking point. From the preface of this book the author states long before modern forensics tire interpretation, the wheels of horse drawn wagons left their tracks over unpaved roads that retained their distinctive features and visual proof of their passage. The visual interpretation of those tracks was made by those who out of necessity and experience acquired observation skills, knowledge, and experience to do so. These old-school visual trackers were some of the forerunners to the modern forensics specialist. This book definitely fills a gap in the modern visual trackers training and knowledge base, whether the tracker is employing these skills in Search and Rescue (SAR) or tactical/combat tracking this book will definitely provide a starting point to understanding this forensic science and provide detailed how-to information. I highly recommend this book.
