This an well-written book that can lead to enhanced understanding of a healthy, high quality food source, its economic value, role in home and restaurant cooking and the survival of Native American culture. The paper is of average quality and the font is readable but a bit too small. It is well enhanced by many well-chosen black and white photographs of a quality that makes specific points well, but does not have the sharpness and contrast needed to make readers exclaim ooh and aah about them.

In "Wild Rice and the Ojibway People," Thomas Vennum opens the way to our understanding not only of a unique American foodstuff but also to its importance in the lives of the Native American people whose livelihood depended on it. I bought it for the culinary information. I keep it for the cultural information that fills out so much of what I learned from a confrere of French Canadian and Ojibway ancestry. It made me want to head for a canoe and beat the rice. This book is a real find.
