This is a very informative book that goes in depth of each class of japanese hand tool, from its origins to its use. Each chapter has lots of detailed drawings to help better understand the information being read. If you want to understand or further explore the world of japanese tools, get this book.
Beautifully written, and personally told

An outstanding presentation of Japanese carpentry, its history, culture, and some practical how to advice. Beautifully written, and personally told, with many anecdotes about Shokunin (very high level Japanese craftsmen) he has known, and his life as Shokunin and then teacher in America. It is very accessible to a Western audience, wood workers or not.
I enjoyed reading this book

I enjoyed reading this book. It is a great reference guide and very comprehensive. The only reason I rate this as a 4 not a 5 is I would have really liked more detail about Tohio Odate's story. I found the most gripping parts of the book to be the narrative portions and I think there were too few of them. If he published a book called "My Life" I would be standing in a queue to buy it as he is a compelling storyteller.
A great work on the subject that I only wish I had in hardcover.

A thorough, and delightful work on the subject of Japanese Woodworking Tools. The words flow from the mind of a master who not only knew his craft, but the tradition that is all encompassing of the craft itself.
