Very educational. My niece was reading it for a freshman book selection. I understand that many universities have selected it too.

Great read. This book will resonate with every first generation Latino(a) entering college. Ms. Capo Crucet does a great job identifying the struggles and concerns that first generation students face in the real world.

This is a very thoughtful portrayal of a young Cuban woman leaving "home" for strangers (college) only to return to home and discover that her family felt strange to her. The author seems to have captured the essence of "first generation" to college.

Enjoyable summer read. Some very strong ideas presented about first generation college students and the fine line they are required to walk as they balance home culture with college/mainstream culture.
Great book for first generation college students.

This book is a wonderful explanation of what first gen students encounter when they enter college. Even if they have the spoken moral support of their families they find themselves pulled in many directions because of difficult cultural expectations. Often the family demands one thing while the college demands another. The students finds herself being torn in pieces by things she doesn't understand. Not making it past the first year is a real possibility. Oftentimes family must come first.
