Excellent book with very cute graphics
Jazmin✓ Verified Purchase•September 12, 2017
Excellent book with very cute graphics. It covers everything that a girl will go through, from acne to periods. It even shows them how to use a pad, shave their legs and choose a bra.
The book uses easy to understand language and gets right to the point about a topic without being lengthy. It discusses puberty and all the changes it brings in simple terms. I really like the parts that go over self care to maintain good hygiene. I highly recommend it to any tween.
It does not cover sex, or any topic related to boys, FYI.

Just perfect

What a great source of info for a young lady, this was a perfect way to start important conversations and lay everything out in a matter of fact way. My daughter enjoyed "reading about herself" and has been enthusiastic to further her hygiene habits. She also enjoyed the accompanying journal.
Girls lose self confidence in their tween years. This will help feed that.

My daughter, as far as she is concerned, is strong, athletic, and has a beautiful body that she can trust. The very first page of this book starts with "Its a struggle for any girl to ask questions when she's dying of embarrassment..."
My daughter is in no way embarrassed by her body, but this book over and over again tells her over and over again to not be embarrassed. We know that these tween years are the years that will erode self confidence for our girls - I really feel like this book will feed into that.
It plants seeds that freckles may be ugly and that other kids will make fun of your breasts and/or braces. Apparently, you're also going to have halitosis as you get older and provides a two page spread about how to shave those hairy legs. Girls need to really to screw up their courage to talk to their parents about needing a bra. It just made me really sad to read.
While the technical information is correct and I really liked some of the instructional material about using pads and choosing bras, the approach to a girl's emotional needs certainly feels like it was written 20 years ago. Even if your daughter *is* embarrassed about her changing body, I still wonder if this would provide a new punch list of concerns for her. I'm surprised that this is still such a popular book.
I will upload a picture of the very first page. On it, you can see that it is written to be upbeat, but there's an underlying theme of self doubt and being embarrassed by these changes. The same tone continues throughout the entire book. It is not for us.
We have settled on _What's happening to me?_ by Usborne, which had a much more matter of fact approach to what is happening, with very similar content.

A friend recommended this book to me and I'm so grateful that she did! This has opened up the line of communication between my daughter and I to talk about puberty and it made it not awkward at all! I had been dreading "the talk" but it being an american girl book made it feel not as intense and the info is presented in a really appropriate way. I simply gave her the book to read and told her if she had any questions, she could come and ask me any time. A couple times I asked her if she had any questions about it and she said no and I left it at that. Then one day, she came to me asking about some things in the book, while pointing to pictures to show me what she was talking about. I could tell she was a little nervous, but once we started talking about it in a matter of fact way, she loosened up and had TONS of questions for me. In a few days she was even asking if we could go bra shopping! I feel like she is so much more prepared now for when the time comes and I'm grateful for having this book.
Wonderful first book explaining body changes for young girls.

I was so relieved to find this book on changes in a girls body. I had ordered 3 other books in search of something that I could read with them, or somehow lead into the changes that their bodies will be making in the next few years, but I felt like all of them were too graphic!
I have an 8 year old and 10 year old girl, and I feel like it's perfect for both of them right now. It explains everything that will be happening to them in the next few years in a clear, simple, innocent way, without going into too much detail. They even have little paragraphs and blurbs about being comfortable in your own skin and not worrying about what other people say about you amidst the health info. I appreciated the little details about how to take care of your hair, and what to do about acne. They have so many good tips for little girls for basic hygiene, but they manage to make it exciting and fun. I felt comfortable enough handing this to my daughter to read on her own and come to me with questions. Very well done American Girl!!
