Get the updated Force Awakens version unless you want R2-D2 and the amazing shield regeneration he provides.
Erik Martinsen•June 18, 2018
I bought this product mainly for the dice and the markers, and for that I am extremely satisfied. If that's what you're looking for too, then look no further. I have no complaints.
However, I gave only gave it three stars because I suggest getting the updated "Force Awakens" version of the core set. The new X-Wing included in the Force Awakens version has the ability to "Boost" and the same stats as the old one for (I believe, I don't have it with me right now) the same point cost making it an overall better ship.
The one really solid thing about this core set is that it includes R2-D2 which is hands down the best astromech (and maybe the best card) in the game--he alone makes this a four star product. Shield re-generation is incredibly powerful. It has saved me on many occasions. If that's worth it to you then this is a solid bet.
The models are solid and high quality.

A geek-tastic time for Star Wars Fans... and everyone else!
TX MetalMan•March 5, 2016
Go ahead... let your inner geek out and buy this game! You can just play with this core set and have a blast. OR, you can start buying the expansions and have even MORE fun with all the ships and characters you grew up with. Then, you'll have to go to group therapy and admit you have a problem. Trust me, that's how it works with X-Wing.
The game really is a ton of fun and is good for adults and can be modified (don't play with ability cards) to play with kids. My son is 7 and he loves it; we now play with full rules, etc. and he's into it. While it is the perfect scratch to your geeky itch, it can be a good game for those who aren't totally obsessed with Star Wars as well as it is very much like chess without a board... but with proton torpedoes. Strategy, options and thinking moves ahead are great skills that are developed while playing this game.
The GOOD: The pre-painted minis look amazing and are good quality, artwork is colorful and detailed, both cards and cardboard pieces are good heavy quality, has materials to play squad vs. squad (or 2-on-1 in the case of just the core set) or you can play one of several scenario based games. Also has a "starter game" to help you learn how to play... sorta. See below.
The NOT-SO-GOOD (can't really say "bad"): Just put the rules book next to your bed and read it over a couple of evenings. It's not a game you are going to be ready to play 10 minutes after opening the box; the devil is in the details and you kinda need to know most of the details to keep the game running once you start playing. But, like most things, once you get in the rhythm or you've encountered a problem for the first time, it'll quickly be old hat. Set up takes a while so if your kid is chomping at the bit to play, you just have to hope they haven't moved on to something else once you are all set up and ready to go. Storage can become an issue, but getting something like the Plano Molding 5231 Organizer Plano Molding 5231 Double Cover Stow N Go Organizer, Porsche Red is a perfect and affordable solution.
Trust me, this is fun for players of all ages. And, I'll bet I'll see you at the next XA meeting (X-Wing Anonymous); it's cool, your secret is safe with me.

Star Wars - X-Wing Miniatures is a Great Game!
Rick B.•February 10, 2016
If you're into board games that require a lot of strategy, then Star Wars "“ X-Wing Miniatures Game may be for you. This is especially true if you are a big Star Wars fanatic. This game is basically a space battle where you and a friend can maneuver your ships to destroy enemy ships. Every time I have played it, I've enjoyed the game a lot as it is very unique, simple, and fun.
The game is very simple as it is divided into game rounds, which is made up of several phases. These phases are structured into deciding each ship's movements, physically moving each ship, and then targeting enemy ships and firing. I have played the game with many of my friends, and each time I explained the rules, they picked up pretty quick, as you can pick up the mechanics after one round.
There are also many smaller aspects of this game that add to the nostalgia. The physical game pieces that are used are 3-D ships that are very accurate and cool! The pieces themselves are one of my favorite things about the game because they are very intricate and I can imagine myself flying an X-wing through space!
One of the drawbacks to having these small, intricate game pieces is that they are also very fragile. I found out by personal experience that you have to be extremely careful with picking them up as they can break easily. But this isn't a big deal because you can just glue it back together.
Probably the biggest drawback is the price. The base game itself is around $30-40, which is not bad for a board game, but you only get two empire ships and one rebel ship. Playing the game with this many ships is okay, but there's not a lot of variety and depth. However, there are dozens of expansions, which provide many cool ships that are in the movies, but each additional ship costs at least $10. The cooler ones cost upward of $30, which is hardly ideal. It's a very fun game, but as you get more into it, the more it will cost you.
This game is well worth the money, especially if you love Star Wars and the idea of flying your own X-Wing.

chances are you will become addicted and need to pick up many many expansions but this is a great start. The ships are well made

This kit is all you need to begin to learn the game of X-Wing Miniatures, chances are you will become addicted and need to pick up many many expansions but this is a great start. The ships are well made and extremely well painted. The bases can have issues though, one of my tie fighters had the pin from the base become stuck in it, it's not an issue with any of my other ships (although they can be tight) so it may have been a rare defect. Many ships in this expansion are still used competitively despite them being up to wave 8 in manufacturing new models. I'd recommend this as an alternative to the more common board games, it's a great entry in to miniatures as it doesn't require you to paint them and they look fantastic on display. Note that this and the Force Awakens core set do contain different cards to each other, it can be worth getting both in order to fill out your fleet and grab more of those much needed attack and defence die. Highly recommended for some addictive collecting and fun gameplay.
lots of fun, but difficult to learn when going in blind
Robert Nevitt•January 10, 2016
ok this is a fun game, but it makes settlers of catan look like candy land in terms of understanding game play. this is jsut a starter set, but keep in mind that with starter sets, just like any other type of "starter", you must buy more to get the full effect. so it is an initial investment into something you will end up spending a decent amount on.
if you go into this blindly, i recommend going on reddit boards adn learning ways to play this or at least get a better understanding how to play. just to give you insight, this comes with 2 instruction books on how to play, so that should tell you that this is going to take some real understanding and thinking when learning how to play. once you do learn though, tis a lot of fun.
