René Chartrand has become Osprey's go-to author for non-British colonial America, and this is another fine effort from his pen, richly supported with excellent color illustrations by David Rickman. Format is typical of the well-established Osprey Men-at-Arms series. That said, Osprey texts can be of highly variable quality. This is one of the first-class examples. The author not only gives details of units and uniforms (the original mission of the Men-at-Arms series), but an excellent, though very brief, history of Spanish colonial units, their composition, equipment, mission and campaigns in the 1700's from California through the southwest and Louisiana and into Florida. This is an excellent addition to the vast Osprey catalog, and highly recommended for anyone truly interested in colonial America or the Spanish Empire.

An excellent overview of a little-known topic.
