I used this picture book both for young readers and as an example of good writing in middle school courses. Students in both groups loved it.
Mochizuki's story of a young baseball player in a World War II Japanese internment camp can stand as simply a story of boy learning to stand up for himself. There's so much more here, though. It's a story about courage, belonging, respect for elders, and teamwork. And yes, this also is an excellent, age-appropriate way to address prejudice and introduce students to one of America's darker chapters.

This is a fantastic book.

I teach 1-3 grade. Years ago I had read this book with third graders and just repurchased it for my classroom. I'll probably leave it in our class library but won't be using it as a read aloud for the 1st and 2 grades (due to content). This is a fantastic book.
