Drilled thru pressure treated doug fir 2x4 blocking in place between rafter tails. The first couple of holes, drilling was very quick as compared to the hole saw that I was previously using. However, on subsequent holes, the bit seemed to have dulled at little as the drill rate noticeably slowed. I resorted to drilling a series of 1/4" holes to lessen the work to be done by the bit which helped noticeably. I haven't tried the bit on different species of wood so I can't comment on the sharpness retention other than my experience with PT doug fir.

Not as pictured. The box only had one bar along the bottom which made the smallest bit off-kilter when set inside. The top of the inside included foam padding for a good fit and protection. As for the bits themselves, I'm amazed at how clean these cuts are. I've heard everyone rave about these forstner bits for a while now and finally decided to get into woodworking and picked this set up as my first choice after carefully selecting. Couldn't have been better for the price. The bits aren't 100% accurate listed sizes, but they chooch nonetheless.

I can't say enough about Freud. I have found their products generally to have been well engineered and carefully crafted. This forstner bit is no exception! Notice the openings on both sides of the cutting head. They serve two functions. First the opening allows you to clearly see where you are lining up to drill. Secondly it very efficiently clears the hole of debris which helps facilitate excellent dust collection. The drill is very sharp and precise. The results are professional. If you are a perfectionist type you won't be disappointed. I have acquired a set of these ranging from 1/2" to 1-3/4" and I couldn't be more pleased with the results.
