Great thermometer for candy!

I love this candy thermometer. It is mostly metal so it should not be as easy for me to break. It makes it so easy to make my grandmother's fudge recipe. I also use it to make my homemade yogurt. I have not tried it in my deep fryer yet but I will try it in my turkey fryer in the summer.

I've tried various candy thermometers and everyone of them failed me one way or another. I bought this thermometer a while ago, but hadn't made any candy until now. It's perfect for my needs. I like that the clip height is not only adjustable to keep it from touching the bottom of my pans, it keeps it away from the sides of the pans. Setting the temperature at first seemed daunting, but it turned out to be easy! My problems in the past were when making peanut brittle...it would scorch constantly. No more! I made two batches yesterday and not one scorch. I'm totally thrilled. Worth the price.

LCD screen is very difficult to read when it gets hot - The first time I boiled my candy to 320° the screen was almost illegible - the second time, the screen turned black and the alarm did not go off. it did return to normal state after it cooled down... I had to use a glass thermometer in the interim.
I did not use the splash guard in either use - but imagine it would reduce the temp from reaching the readout... The splash guard was very difficult to put on the stem... so I didn't use it. I will next time to see if it makes a difference.

Great tool...the beeping (and flashing!) alarm when the temp you choose is reached is a game-changer when making something like Italian buttercream that demands your attention to a noisy mixer while the syrup bubbles. Comments from others about the thermometer's lack of heat-proofing aren't really that well-founded. There is a heat shield that does a reasonable job protecting the plastic housing from splatters, etc. My only disappointment was with the instructions for assembling: it's not rocket science, but it did not seem like the parts would go together as they should. Feel free to force (gently) to get the thermometer into the holder, at an angle; if you do, and face the screen upwards, you won't have the issue someone wrote about re: having to bend and awkwardly read the screen.
