Beware short expiration dates

Purchased 12-pack of 9v batteries. 9 came with an expiration date less than 2 years (Mar2019), and 3 with a 3 yr expiration (Mar2020). Truly new batteries would have 5-7 year expiration; I'dve been happy with an average of ~4 yrs. These have apparently been sitting on a shelf somewhere for a long time. Amazon refunded without hassle. These are basically new old-stock batteries! Am guessing that's the reason they were attractively priced.
3 of the batteries failed and the bottom expanded.

Had one die in a digital scale. The bottom of the battery was expanding out. I went to my battery stash and pulled out the last 2 from the box. Both of them had the expanded bottom. Neither one produced any voltage. I verified my scale worked with a new battery from a different vendor.

I bought a pack of 12 of these to do my yearly smoke alarm battery replacement. About 8 hours later ( in the middle of the night) i woke up to chirping smoke alarms. The reason being...4 out of 12 where testing low. In other words junk!

I have tried multiple battery brans for all the standard home use batteries. (AA, AAA, 9V, D, C, etc.) I have found the Duracell batteries seem to last longer the the other well known brands. Not a scientific study, just seems I don't have to replace them and order more as frequently.
