No Leaks!
Jason B Ritchie•July 18, 2018
Finally! No more leaks when developing film! I had been using tanks made by Omega for quite a while and they have always leaked everywhere. I find this Patterson tank and reels to be far superior. The only thing I would advise is to be very careful when dumping liquids because the funnel will come flying out along with your film spools right into the sink with a hard upside down shake. Don't ask me how I know this. So just keep a finger over the lip when you shake out the final drops of developer and it will be fine.
and it just seems like it wouldn't be light tight

First time using anything other than the old school stainless steel reel. Lots of pieces to keep track of in a darkroom, and it just seems like it wouldn't be light tight, but developed 3 rolls in the time it would have taken me to do 1 with the stainless reel. Super easy to load, being able to do 2 35mm rolls at the same time is great, and I plan on putting some 120 film though it soon as I just purchased my first medium format camera. Volume markings on the bottom seemed dead on for the amount of liquid required to cover the film.
If the reels lasted forever this would be the perfect product.

I love these tanks. Every time i've used a stainless steel reel I somehow mess up my film and lose an image or ten. These reels are easy to load and work well. I gave them four stars because after using my tank for 6 months or so, the reels jam about 4/5ths of the way in. If you use 24 shot rolls this wouldn't be an issue but I use 36. The bearing is fine and there are no burrs in the plastic it just jams. Trying to buy the reels by themselves are the same price as this package. That being said i've ordered another package but can't give it five stars because the reels don't last forever. Still highly recommended.
Pretty much the standard when it comes to home developing ...

Pretty much the standard when it comes to home developing film. The reels are very easy to use, even in the dark. I suggest if it is your first time developing at home to practice with some dud film in the light before developing your first roll of film. The lid click in nicely and the agitator is nice. If you want to develop film at home go ahead and buy this kit. Works with two rolls of 35mm or one roll of 120.
Good tank. Awful reels.

This tank does the job. Light proof, easy to use, and the right price. The only thing keeping it from being a 5 star is the reels. Getting film on them takes more than just a little practice. It is slightly easier than the old metal reels, but not much. If your film is thinner and flimsy then it is nearly impossible and you have to trim the corners, in the dark, to keep the film from jamming against the reel and creasing.
There are better reels out there that will fit this tank and do a much better job. I have not switched to those and cannot believe I fought with these for so long. It is a night and day difference. So get the tank, it works well and does its job, but toss the reels. You want the reels with the wide loading ramp where these have small little tabs that you can't hardly feel in the dark. Just as an example, I picked up the ones from Adorama and they fit this tank fine. This tank is better than the one offered by Adorama, but the reels are not even close.
Save yourself some frustration get different reels.
