High quality and very well designed

I surveyed numerous toilet brushes available locally and on Amazon and decided on this one. Most of the ones I physically saw were cheaper and that was obvious in the flimsy handles and bases. Cleaning a toilet is unpleasant enough without having to deal with a cheap flimsy brush. I've been able to count on OXO to at least TRY to design a product which works well. They don't always score 100% but their products are almost always near the top. They put more emphasis on their products being functional than being cheap, and should be applauded for that.

What I like about this product: The handle is heavy solid plastic which seems to be strong enough to take a reasonable amount of pressure without flexing or threatening to break. The top of the handle is smooth and feels good in the hand (it's the only part that you need to touch). The brush has bristles which are quite stiff, but with the right amount of flex. The brush head is replaceable (replacements available here on Amazon). The base works effortlessly "” pull the brush straight up and the base flips open and stays open. When the brush is replaced the base closes smoothly. The brush sits in a platform within the base so that any drips are collected in the bottom of the base and evaporate easily. The base has four shallow bumps which serve as feet. At first I thought I'd add rubber feet, but then realized that the plastic bumps allow the base to slide easily so if you want to keep it against the wall or in a corner it is easy to slide around by the handle while it's in the base. At this point I can't see any improvements needed.

A couple of recommendations I gathered from reading other reviews before I made the purchase: The brush does unscrew from the handle for replacement, but it is screwed on very tight "” unscrew the brush when you first get it (while it's still clean) so you can see how it unscrews, then screw it back on but not quite as tightly. There were many complaints about the label being hard to remove "” I think OXO must have listened to the complaints because the label I received is the easily peeled off plastic type which left no residue. It's always best to peel off any label very slowly to avoid tearing and to give the adhesive time to release, though I see no problem with this label and there's no need for Goo-Gone.

In reading through some reviews and questions for other toilet brushes, I ran across a question someone asked that I thought was funny... though it made me gag a little: The question was "” to clean the toilet brush, is it okay to put it in the dishwasher?!! Gee!
Compact and attractive toilet brush that won't disappoint

I bought 2 OXO Grips Hideaway Compact Toilet Brushes a while ago. It's a neat and compact brush that hides away very well. The open/close mechanism is a handy feature--no need to balance the brush back in the cradle. The brush bristles are firm but not stiff. Bristles clean well without a lot of pressure. The shape of the brush helps with under the rim cleaning as well. Nice feature: the exchangeable brush. It saves the environment as well as cost.

I don't understand some of the negative comments regarding brush "unscrewing easily" as well as "flooding" after cleaning or problems with removing the stickers. Here's my experience:

1. The brush head does not come off easily and certainly not with normal cleaning. I tested how firmly the bristles are attached to the pole when the brush arrived. It was VERY firmly attached and it took a bit of strength to get it off! My advice would be to try to get it off once before using the brush. Screw it back on but not as tight. Again, the brush head will NOT come off with normal cleaning.

2. I can see where the "flooding" issue comes from. The brush is obviously wet after cleaning. I usually shake it out (gently) and there is little to no dripping water left. Whatever volume drips down from there is easily contained. So far, I've had no drips or "floods" at all. The inside of the container seems to be completely dry by next brush session.

3. The sticker issue that is none. Like most newer sticker, this one came off easily. No residue at all. The trick is to peel at the corner and SLOWLY peel in one direction. For larger stickers, I sometimes pull several corners and work my way to the center. If somehow a bit of residue is left a little nail polish remover can help. Or GooGone, but that one is oily and needs to be washed with soap afterwards.

Some advice once brush has been in use for a while: toilet containers need the occasional cleaning as well. Yes, nobody enjoys that and I'd rather do something else too but it avoids germs and odor down the road. I spray either a bit of vinegar or clorox to the inside while holding over the toilet or a container that can be disposed of. Rinse with water...done. Or, if you have money to spare, get a brand new one. Changing the brush may also be a bit unappetizing. I recommend wearing disposable gloves to avoid direct contact with the bristles.

Drawbacks? Mechanically, none. Design is not terribly exciting and neither are the color choices but I personally can live with that.
Good brush, bad economics.

Note: I don't like to review items until I've lived with it for a while. I grade based on value (cost vs function). I bought 2 of these in 6 months ago.
Pros: Well designed handle fits very well in hand. Brush gets into more areas than others I've used. Canister looks good next to toilet.
Cons: Brush is not durable. I've had to replace both heads after 5 months of use. Bristles started to come out. The replacement heads do not fit tightly as the originals and need to be tightened during each use. Canister started to visibly show algae/mold at the bottom of the door and needed to be bathed in vinegar every month or two.
Summary: Good brush, but expensive (I expect it will have to replaced every year). Cost for 1 year of use: 15.99 (brush) + 5.99 (head replacement) = 21.98. My last brush was a stainless steel monstrosity that cost about $26 but lasted for 10 years. If cost does not matter to you, this brush is a pleasure to use.
Patiently remove the sticker!

Streamlined. Stylish. Pure white. Easy to use without having to touch anything other than the handle which is rounded with no sharp edges. Firm bristles gets the job done. One little hint: Carefully pick at one edge of the sticker until you can grab it with your fingernails, and peel off *slowly*. I'd read all the reviews, so I was extremely patient in removing the sticker. Nice size, and clean looking sitting out in the open behind the toilet. And yes, I would buy this again if/when I need to.
OXO Good Grips Hideaway Compact Toilet Brush...

This Toilet Brush has a big advertisement label on it. I tried to peel it off, but it seems to be glued on to stay! The label looks and feels like it has a plastic coating on it. Otherwise I might be able to use something that removes blue, but the plastic coating wouldn't let it soak through to the glue. I could probably take the label off with a razor blade, but it would mess up the shinny, plastic surface of the toilet brush holder. So I decided to leave it on. The seller ( OXO ) doesn't show this BIG label in their product description. This label covers about half of the front of the toilet brush holder. The label should have been put on so it could have been easily peeled off with a fingernail. OXO, shouldn't have put their advertisement on their product with permanent glue. I would have given this product more stars, but my review probably would be overlooked if I'd given it more stars. I like the toilet brush and it's got a sturdy handle that makes it easy to use and hold. The holder works as described. I assume that this brush and holder will last for a while, since OXO put their label on to stay. I wish I knew how to get label and glue off without damaging the plastic brush holder underneath the label and leaving the sticky glue to collect bacteria, dirt and grime.
