Used HK gives good performance
HarikrishnanOctober 9, 2016
I brought this at $ 50 for a used with one of the satellite speakers coming out. I got the product in the original packing as was promised by the supplier. My intention to buy this was to get only the sub-woofer as now I am using this in Saudi Arabia where earth shattering subwoofers use at high volumes could end up in Jail. I have a Yamaha TSR 6750 AV Amp connected to Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers as front and Kilpsch RC 52 as front and Klipsch RS25 as surround. I was looking around for a good sub-woofer which would give me excellent performance at low volumes. I am extremely impressed with the performance of this sub-woofer which is connected to the AV amp to the dual sub woofer outs using a good quality dual RCA male to female 3.55 stereo. The low frequency sound is simply amazing at low volumes though the sub-woofer placement is very important. The above connection ensures that the satellite speakers are not used since only the low frequency signals are going to sub-woofer. Both the satellite speakers have been opened in to 2 and I have found that 2 small speakers have fallen out of the groove. Just pressing it back itself gives a feel about the high quality of the mid and high frequencies. However I am yet to glue it back for a permanent solution. However I think this speaker coming out of the groove in satellite speaker is a problem for HK and hope they take care of this in coming models. I am using this set up in a huge room of 24 feet x 12 feet and I am extremely happy with the speakers in terms of quality and volume.

Some things are best left alone in the tech world, this is one of them

I had the original set of these for the apple g4 power mac and sold them and got these as a later replacement for a quad intel 2.8 ghz machine and not much has changed from them really, this is typically a bad thing in the world of electronics but here other than not using the usb connection to the computer(their now 3.5mm), their the same speakers. I think you could find better computer speakers spending more money(around $500) or using active studio monitors but these take up a LOT more desk space and also don't typically have a subwoofer either. Theirs a reason these things are still made in the third and bluetooth revisions and changed little, theirs no need to change a product like this! Magazine reviews of these often have to point out their NOT a retro review from 2004. Used pairs may show some wear and tear and such, but often still sound as new, and cost is often reflected in the price too. their a bit futuristic looking for some folks, but if you get past that, their hard to dislike. The other factor on these is look how little the price has changed on these,i think these sold originally for around 169 dollars or so, and used pricing is still quite high really, a good 60-80% of original price and how many tech products do that today?

Don't Believe the Hype!!!

The Harman Kardon SoundSticks II off clear sound, nice design, and all for a decent price. All too often speakers are sold with the idea that some how boosting the bass dramatically makes for good audio quality. I am here to tell you that this is not the case. The current big name for this would be Beats, the creators of beats by dre, and the newest company to work with apple in it's sound applications. The truth is that companies like Harman Kardon and Bose are actually delivering better sounding products as they are better to suited to playing all kinds of music and not just bass heavy genres. Not all recordings were meant to sound like a giant dark club so why buy hundreds of dollars on speakers that treat everything you put through them as such? I guarantee you it will sound awkward and will bug you leaving you with a feeling something is "off" in the way your audio sounds.

Be kind to your ears and your music. Do yourself a favor. check out these Harman Kardon before you follow all the hype. They are a great route to take when considering a new set of speakers.
