Questionable Seasoning Process for the Carbon Steel
jsick✓ Verified PurchaseNovember 25, 2017
This item is made from carbon steel so a "seasoning" process is required for initial use to remove the factory chemical coating. I followed the instructions word for word and during the phase where it tells you to heat up oil over the stove for the first time I got this weird micro divet on the flat part of my pan (as seen in the picture). It looks a smal patch of the pan was chiselled out. I'm fairly confident this is due to a manufacturer default so I will be messaging Amazon to see what they have to say. If this happened to anyone else or if anyone can provide some insight please comment.
Wok It To Me, Baby

This is the one wok to own. Read the treatise on woks by Kenji Alt-Lopez. You don't want any wok with a non-stick coating, and there are drawbacks to the pre-seasoned ones too. You might consider cast iron, but read Kenji's piece first. This hammered steel has the right texture to gradually become seasoned with oil. Price is nice, too. This is my third attempt at seasoning a wok and the first success. Also the handles are more durable than those with wood.
Great Wok!!

I initially got the classic series. But then changed my mind an got this. I truly love it, because
1. Light weight still sturdy
2. Handles help a lot and does not get hot while cooking
3. 14" is the ideal size for cooking for 4 people

Following are the steps I used:
1. Boiled 7 to 8 cups of water. Scrub the inside and outside of wok thoroughly in warm soapy water to move the chemical coating.
2. Heat the wok, add 1 tbsp oil and evenly rub it on the inside surface and keep it on med heat for 8 to 10 mins.
3. Let it cool and repeat this process 3 times. A golden layer will form on the inside of the wok. This is the non stick layer.

After you use the wok for cooking. Scrub in warm water until you remove the residues. Once you clean it, heat up the wok until it dries completely. Rub 1.5tsp oil on the inside and store.
easy to handle

light weight (good thing), easy to handle, still looks great after seasoning

I used costco's canola oil spray to season it, rotating the wok every 1 minute on a medium-high heat on my gas range
The bottom is not a very pronounced round shape so it should work for most people even with a shallow wok ring
i wouldve prefer something more round and protrudes out, but it is alright

the quality is very good, as you would expect from Made in Taiwan stuff
Still holding up great after a year and half of almost daily use

I got this about a year and eight months ago, but I forgot to review it until now. It's very sturdy and still in good shape. It's just as described. I didn't have any really heavy duty scrubbers like a steel scouring pad, so I used a plastic scrubber, washing soda, (the kind used as a laundry detergent booster or for household cleaning), water, and I think dish soap to scour away the oil coating it comes with before seasoning it. That seemed to work fine. The screws on the underside of the smaller handle can heat up along with the pan, so watch out for that. They are recessed a bit, but I can still touch them.
