Will not look like the photo when loaded unless EVERY square inch is ...
killer kenneDecember 20, 2016
Did what we needed it to do. Kept our luggage safely stowed on the roof of our Grand Cherokee. Kind of a PITA to load/unload. So try not to pack things in it that you will frequently need along your trip. Also, bring a step stool/mini step ladder or stand on a cooler if u forget to bring one. You can thank me later. Will not look like the photo when loaded unless EVERY square inch is filled with something (never gonna happen) but didnt buy for looks I suppose. Have not used in rain yet so cannot report on how well it can keep water out. In the end it did what we needed it to do for alot less than a rigid plastic thule one. However if I were looking for a rooftop carrier that id need to use on a semi regular basis id shell out the extra cash for a rigid one with a hinge and a lock that can EASILY be gotten into and out of if need be while still keeping contents securely locked up at the same time.
Good value

It stayed intact on our trip from San Diego to Seattle. It is almost impossible to get it looking packed perfectly like the photo, it is almost certainly going to come out looking all lumpy no matter what you do. Our car (Mazda CX-7) created an awkward mounting for this as we have cross rails on the roof but they do not work very well with the included straps as they only go across the car, not lengthwise. We tried the in car hooks to augment but they did not fit our vehicle. In short, we went with the sedan installation instructions and strengthened it with some rope around the cross bars. Not the prettiest solution but it is to be expected that a universal product like this will not be 100% every time.

It was worth the purchase, kept our stuff dry and is in storage for our next big trip.
5/5 would recommend

This top carrier is amazing. I had to move out of state, and could not fit all of my belongings in my Honda Civic 2004. I read all the comments and reviews and decided to buy the non-skid roof pad and the car clips along with the top carrier. I am SO glad I did. The strap instructions are really poorly worded and illustrated, I could not figure out if I was tying them correctly and it seemed kinda loose. Having no roof racks on my car, I found the car clips to be much easier to install, and much more reassuring -the straps felt tighter. Although I had to remove the weatherstrippings, it wasn't a big deal and it was pretty easy to put back afterwards. I'm also convinced the non-skid pad was essential to the succes of this trip.
As most reviewers advised, I stuffed the carrier as much as possible. I only put clothes and soft things in it, but it could have handled heavier items for sure. Also, the straps do flap around when you drive over 40mph, it can get really bad, but for some reason it stopped after a while so I didn't have to try and twist them as I read in some comments.

In the end, this thing did NOT budge during the 18+ hours drive and it also kept all my clothes dry through Pennsylvania storms.
Great, but buy ratchet straps too

I'll echo the rest of the reviews: This is a life-saver if you're trying to go camping but have a sedan instead of an SUV, both because it massively increases storage and doesn't need a luggage rack. The bag holds a surprising amount of stuff. We fit a folding table, a 10-person tent, 2 camping chairs, a sleeping bag, an air mattress, and a bunch of blankets (useful for filling out the shape of the bag) on our most recent use of it. However, I'd recommend a few additional items for peace of mind:
-Buy some spongy shelf liner material for a few dollars instead of the pad they try to sell you. It isn't super necessary, but it's nice to have a layer between the bag and the car. You can also trim some pieces off to place between the straps and the weather stripping on your door so you don't cut up the stripping.
-Use ratchet straps instead of the flimsy nylon ones included with the bag. We never drove with the included set, but they just don't seem terribly strong and it would be tough to get enough tension on them to keep the bag from sliding.
-Whatever straps you use, put a half-twist in them right above the car door. It'll prevent the annoying hum from airflow on the highway.
Worked Perfectly

This carrier was purchased for a move from Florida to Indiana. Storms were redicted, but we only ran into a bit of rain. Though some people didn't give this time very good reviews, we found it to be excellent for our needs. The secret we found was to pack it tight, and pack from the front back, so that the front of the carrier has a sold area for wind to hit. We have a Nissan Passat, so used the rails to secure on the roof. We did not buy cross bars, and were a bit worried that we had made a mistake in not doing so. However, with the use of a rubber mat as is used under a rug, the carrier did not lift or slide.
