This set makes it pretty darn easy to make creme brulee. 6 years ago my now wife and in-laws were impressed when a 17 year old boy surprised them with delicious creme brulee. To this day they still get excited when they hear I'm making some. Bought this as an extra set to make more at a time. I've always used the recipe on the back of the box and had good results. Take a couple finished ones, wrap them in plastic , put them in a little cooler and hide them in your car. Make sure to bring a little torch and a little sugar for the top. Then when you are out with your date or spouse pick a place with a nice view during sunset and pull off and surprise them with it. Something simple like that will go a long ways and leave an impression on them. Dont forget the spoons either.

I gave this product 5 stars for being a good, well-made kitchen item. I bought it as I planned to foray into making egg custards, and read reviews on this product. Some said that the pan was not dishwasher-safe, but I don't know why you would WANT to put the pan/rack in the dishwasher...since it is filled with water, in the 2 batches I've made so far it was trivial to clean both times...no baked-on stuff on the pan/rack, only in the ramekins.

Now, I want to flag that I read in the comments that you cannot get replacement ramekins for broken ones. However, I went ahead & bought some 6oz ramekins from Bed Bath & Beyond (says 6 3/4 oz, I got just over 6 oz measured): Libbey Glass 6-Piece Glass Ramekins Set with Lids SKU # 47058484. I wanted some w/lids for transporting egg custards. They fit!! They touch the bottom of the pan (they aren't held up like the ones in the set), but they fit just fine & can be lifted out w/ the rack. Thought you all ought to know!

Now a description:
The pan is heavier than I had thought it would be, nice & substantial. Ditto the rack. Since I have arthritis a bit in my hands, gripping is an issue, so I would like to point out the pan "wings" are easy to grip (wide enough) and the handles on the rack are high enough to easily grasp as well.
The ramekins themselves are a nice weight... but I should note that I measured their volume & it is closer to 5.5 oz than 6 oz. They are held a short distance above the bottom of the pan by the rack, as described. Definitely worth the price, IMO.

Such a smart idea to incorporate the wire lifter, pan of just the right size and classic ramekins into one package! No more spilling water or using too large of a pan to deal with because of this set. The wire rack keeps the ramekins from resting on the bottom of the pan for even baking. It all appears well made. I used a recipe from Julia Child and used the oven temp and cooking times from the back of this package. OMG! My little family raved about it. I like it so much that I just ordered a second set!

I love creme brûlée so I was really excited to get this set( along with my cool culinary torch).
PROS
1) The ramekins are heavy and really high quality. They are not like the cheap ones from WalMart.
2) The pan is also of good quality
CONS
1) When picking up the insert that holds the ramekins, they fall down into place. So, if you don't pick them up carefully, they splash into the water.

My conclusion is that it's just as easy to put the ramekins into a shallow casserole with water instead of using the pan and insert. In the future, I use these nice ramen kind exactly this way. I'm not unhappy with my purchase, though, because nice ramekins cost more than I spent on this set. In addition, I have another good cake pan.

Used this for the first time on Thanksgiving. Worked like a charm. No breaking of the custard. The tray fits well in the pan and it's so easy to remove. Wish it held 6 ramikens, as most recipes I've used make more than what these can hold, but I ended up just doing one and a half batches. Hoping the ramikens never break, as other reviewers have said you cannot order replacements. Great product.
