We thought our treadmill was defective, turns out it just needed some lubrication. This brought it back from the dead, no problems. Well I've had my treadmill for like 5 years and I had no idea that I was supposed to lubricate it every month, so I used considerably more that the 1 month supply indicated on the bottle, but after thoroughly lubricating and tightening up the belt with the wrench, my belt no longer slips or squeaks and I am happily jogging out of public view again!
