So, first I bought one of the pretty blue-green "sharpening stones" (Here's a hint, those aren't stone, they're just grit formed into a block.) which didn't do any good at all. Why? Probably because my husband and I *use* our knives. And then they sit in the sink for a while, probably covered in acidic tomato goo, before they get thrown into the dishwasher or lumped in with all of the other cutlery to handwash. Our knives get treated pretty poorly, and I would argue that most people's knives do. Those "block of fancy grit" stones don't get rid of nicks. The dark grey 400 grit actually made out of rocks stone in the Smith's kit does.and then that little white stone that looks like it couldn't sharpen anything? It puts a nice, sharp edge on all of my knives--from the cheapo Big Box $8 knives to the really expensive one that I only use when I'm pretending to know how to really cook. Motto: don't look for the pretty block. Look for the ugly, cheap-looking block.

I bought this kit recently to sharpen my chef knife. It works pretty well, with the perfect size to use at home, portable and easy to use. I cook meat a lot at home and struggle for a long time to sharpen my knife with the edge of a bowl. This kit works perfectly for me.

A good product at a great price. The stand is sturdy and keeps the sharpening stone at a good height above the work surface. The blade angle guide could've been better. I find myself constantly readjusting it while sharpening. Maybe they could've attached a rubber foot on it? --1/2 star for that but not enough to knock a full star.

I like the product. And it came with a 20% off coupon. (probably why mine was a previous return). The yellow base with the coarse stone has a place on the under side where you can secure the smooth stone with clips, which is cool because I seem to lose everything. Didn't use the oil due to personal preference, just used water. Comes with a nice guide so you get the right angle of 23 degrees for knives. Does it's job though.

With Smiths you cant go wrong when it comes to putting an edge on your blades!Its easy t use and you can sharpen a knife in no time hardly and it has both a honing stone and finishing rock with oil bt I use water and always have and always will.I grew up using water with honing stones and that's all I ever used unless there was no water and alittle spit goes a long ways,LOL,but it does work and a good piece of leather comes in handy if you can find a piece to use it on a knife blade like you would a straight razor..
