I didn't realize til we got it that it has an "adjustable tuning section" on the smaller "loop" of tubing that can be pulled out to the length of the larger "loop"

Bugles have small mouth pieces, I found it tougher to play than the trombone, which has much larger mouth piece.

Just what my son wanted for Boy Scouts! The reasonable price was on target for this basic bugle. While he prefers to use his familiar trumpet mouthpiece, the included mouthpiece is decent. Overall the tone and timbre are fine for my beginning bugler.

I am a Chaplain in my local SCV camp and I wanted to be able to play taps at funerals and special events. I played clarinet for a few years in my youth, and somewhere along the lines, my parents picked me up a coronet when I was young. I never had lessons on the trumpet or coronet, but I learned to blow it and play a couple of tunes on it. I figured that I could teach myself to blow a bugle. I originally ordered a cheap civil war era bugle and was disappointed. It would play, but the notes were not correct when I would try to play a scale. I realized it was more of a display item than a serious instrument. After doing some research, I decided on the US Regulation Bugle Gold Lacquer Bugle. I figured that if it is good enough for the US Military and Boy Scouts, it would be the right one for me! Yep, cost a little more, but well worth it. I got a couple of books to learn from with CD and a DVD, but so far, I have been practicing hitting the notes and holding them in order to get my lip back! This bugle not only looks beautiful, it plays beautiful. I matched the notes to my piano, and they were right on. This bugle may not be Civil War era, but that is okay. I'm sure no one will really notice (well, at least in my camp...and if they do, they will be okay with it). I can hit all the notes for Taps, just not real clean yet. But, I've only just begun! If you have the money and want a really good bugle, I would say that you should get this one. You can tune it with the slide and the mouth piece is removable. The mouth piece is a nice one as well.
