Happy they made a budget version
GrumpyDadAugust 28, 2018
As a beginner with marine navigation, I was happy to find a cheaper alternative. I'm sure for blue ocean sailors the premium price is worth paying for premium tools, but I didn't want to spend $100 to practice chart plotting on day sails.
Reflections annoying

Ahhhrgh. Nicely made, feels sturdy, doesn't wobble or exhibit any low tolerance behavior, but...the surface is super shiny and reflections can limit the angle you can use ruler. The black variety, which I have as well, doesn't have the reflection, but you can't see through it. What's more important? For me, almost three stars because I have to situate the work just right to not be blinded by the reflections. Maybe if you're working with maps there's a reason to see through the ruler, but for plan work and drawings, a black ruler is easier on the eyes. Maybe a slightly scuffed or satin surface texture would lessen the reflection problem.

A must have for the student or professional navigator.

This is definitely the product to have when performing plotting problems (I'm a celestial navigation student). I use this much more often than the navigational triangle. I like the magnification and the pre-marked lines, making it super easy, and making accurate measurements. Also, appears to be well made. If you had to make a decision to either get this or the navigational triangle get the Parallel ruler, and a cheap 90 degree triangle.
