Perfect fruit cake

I sliced the fruit cake and froze the slices to make it last. Even frozen the fruit cake is soft and moist. It is a very good cake. Some fruit cakes can taste too sweet, not this one. I am impressed how good it is.

I have never liked fruitcake, but my Mom does, so I bought this for her. After eating a piece of it (reluctantly), I'm hooked. The cake is delicious with the candied pineapple instead of the candied lemon peel, and the pecans and walnuts taste fresh. The liquor soak adds a nice aroma and slight flavor to the cake as well. Mom also likes it, so I think we have a new Christmas tradition.
That fruitcake was delicious.

We tested 3 different fruitcakes so you don't have to...

My family had a fruitcake face-off this year between the Walkers Glenfiddich whisky cake, the Collin Street Bakery Deluxe fruitcake, and the Grandma's Famous Old-Fashioned fruitcake. You will see this review under each fruitcake tested, so you can move on if you've seen it elsewhere.

The five of us ranged in age from 17 to 85 and we rated each one on appearance, aroma, texture, moistness, and flavor. 3 out of the 5 of us regularly eat fruitcake during the holidays, and the other two have had it before. All fruitcakes were served at room temperature. We scored them independently and discussed the results afterwards.
Long story short "“ we each ranked the Grandma's first, the Collins St second, and the Walkers third.

Now, the rest of the story"¦

The Grandma's was the clear winner. It had the best flavor and aroma. It tied with the Collins on appearance. The Grandma's was a tradeoff between moistness and texture "“ it tended to crumble more than the other two but scored the highest on moistness. The Grandma's had the strongest whisky notes of the three tested. All enjoyed the Grandma's. We rank it 5 stars.

The Collins was second. It had a similar aroma to the Grandma's and tied on appearance. It held together better than the Grandma's but was a bit dryer in texture and on the palate. It had the strongest citrus notes of the three. 2 out of the 5 of us thought it was good, 1 thought it was okay, and 2 didn't like it. We give it 3 stars.

The Walkers was a distant third. It scored the lowest in all categories. It looked and tasted dry. It had a dry, waxy aroma and texture. It had some holiday spice notes "“ cinnamon and clove "“ but none of us enjoyed it. Those of us who are scotch drinkers agreed that Glenfiddich should stick to making that and steer clear of making fruitcakes. We give it 1 star.

So the 5 of us recommend the Grandma's, 3 of us think the Collins is good to try if Grandma's isn't available, and none of us recommend the Walkers.

Enjoy the holidays and happy eating!
