Works good as long as you square up the chisel at the right length for the angle you want
William Herreman•September 21, 2017
This honing guide works well, I had to file down the front of both side so it would have a flat base to use a small combination square. Make sure your chisel sticks out the proper amount from the front of the guide for the angle that you want (1 5/8 for 25 degree angle) and that it's in the guide squaire. You may want to tighten it with a screwdriver so it doesn't move. I also check it quite often to make sure it hasn't moved. I use it for rough diamond stones, 150, 320 grit. Once I get to 600+ I use a more accurate honing guide (Veritas). You know you get what you pay for but it has it's uses.
Too small for my 2"+ chisels and no where in description does it state what is the max size.

I got this to sharpen my chisels. I have ranging from 1/8" to all the way to 3". To my disappointment even my 2" would not fit in here. I'm in the process of looking for one bigger one that would work with 2"+
While it doesn't fix my larger chisels, all the one that are smaller than 2" all fix and works well. I am able to get a consistent angle and a very nice flat bevel.

Great for beginning sharpeners or truing an edge

Be careful though, it doesn't always naturally grip the chisel or plane iron squarely so you need to at least eyeball it. Also, if you know the edge your sharpening is already true, stop after a couple passes to see if it's cutting square on the edge or favoring one side or another. Otherwise, this is great for those just beginning to sharpen their own tools and not yet confident in holding the correct angle, or even for those who are more confident but simple need to remove a lot of material to fix a dinged edge.
For finer woodworking, it's better to sharpen by hand to lightly round the edge from roughly 30 degrees to 25 degrees however, this tool will allow you to set a 25 degree primary bevel and a 30 degree micro bevel very easily, which is pretty standard for most chisels and plane irons.

Good tool - Good price

Look...You can pay about $13 for this, which works just fine or you can go pay $125 for an overpriced honing guide that has so many fiddly adjustments, you'll probably never use half of them. ...And if you feel you just Have to have all those fiddly adjustments on a Veritas?.... you may want to do something about that OCD before you worry about sharpening your irons and chisels.
Bottom Line : It needs a bit of tuning, but 5 minutes with a file and you have a good honing guide that doesn't cost a fortune .

terrible! like many users have mentioned already it wont hold a chisel steady. the chisel will rock in the guide rendering it practically useless. some users have also mentioned there are plenty of instructional videos showing how this with some filing can be modified and rendered serviceable. not true. i followed the instructions and filed exactly as shown. the blade holds tight now but the edge does not come out straight after sharpening. i feel cheated because this is $12 dollars down the drain on a cheap tool which does not deliver the functionality it promises. if your'e looking for precise and sharp angles and probably you are if you are looking at a honing guide then do yourself a favor and spend $50 more for a quality honing guide which will do the job right.
