A good VCR/DVD recording combo.

I got a refurbished Magnavox MWR20V6 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo in mid November. It works well and is easy to use. I was very pleased about how quickly I got it, too. The only thing I'm not completely pleased about is the Owner's Manual. The way it is set up is confusing. It is not an original manual, so the company I bought the VCR/DVD Combo from simply made a photo copy of the manual without putting the pages in the correct order. I think I'll be able to figure it out, though. If not, I might be able to get a better copy online. Magnavox MWR20V6 DVD Recorder/VCR Combo
WORKING GREAT

I've been using the VHS to DVD dubbing feature to transfer old home movies. It's been a super simple process and I saved a ton of money by not using a mail service. The Magnavox MWR20V6 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo has been working great for me.

Magnavox MWR20V6 DVD recorder/VCR combo. I already own one of these remanfactured units, purchased it at a value city before they shut down in our city, So happy to have found another one, reason being it isn't digital so I don't have to have it on to watch tv, and you can still tune to channel 3 or 4(NTSC tuner) and not have to change the input on your tv ( which I find annoying whenever you wanted to use it) it is an older unit(2006) so it has the coax hook up on the back these types of units are rare these days,it is easy to use once you learn everything, found the manual easy to understand, and recordings are very good.I'm hooked up to satelite so I don't need a digital box and everything works just fine, also hooked a home theater system (5.1 channel) to it so recordings, produce great sound.
Will Transfer Your Commercial VHS tapes too!

These units are advertised as great for converting your home movies, and stuff you recorded on tape. Yes,that is true, but these units are good for your COMMERCIAL vhs tapes as well.

I had HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of vhs commercial vhs tapes. There was no dvd format when I first started buying movies. As movies I really loved came out in dvd format, I replaced the tapes, but I had SO MANY.

I actually priced getting them copied to dvd, but the cost was $20 per tape. Even then, I doubt that the business would have copied my commercial tapes. One day, I found this unit!

MOST of my tapes were able to transfer. So many I had purchased before copy-protected was introduced. Of course, the transfers had to be done in real-time. In those days of the big push to get them copied, I had two units going almost non-stop. I would leave for work with two movies copying, come home and begin again. FYI, I went through all of the tapes first and put them in pairs - two movies which would complement each other on one dvd.

It took an entire summer, but I managed to get all of the movies transferred, with some exceptions. No Miramax or Disney tape would copy, some Warner Bros would not copy and a few others here and there, but stacks and stacks and stacks of commercial vhs tapes DID copy and copy beautifully. Even all 58 hours of my I Love Lucy video club vhs tapes transferred perfectly.

I will say that the weakest link in these units is the vcr. I blew out two, however, remember, I had them going literally every hour I was awake and home. I kept those units as the dvd players still work great. However, I quickly replaced them with new units to get everything copied.

There are pros and cons of having tracking vs no tracking. The no tracking units track better, however when I came upon a tape with tracking issues, it sure was nice to have the tracking option to clean up the picture. If I had to choose one, I would get the one with the option to adjust the tracking.

I had one unit with a tuner and the rest without. For dubbing those old commercial tapes, I found the ones without the tuner work best. There were many times the one with the tuner would give me an "unable to copy" notice, but when I took the same vhs tape to a non-tuner unit, it copied perfectly. In addition to this occuring with a number of commercial tapes, I found this especially the case with my own personal tapes of things I copied from HBO years ago. No dice on the tuner unit; all systems go on the non-tunered one. So, go with the unit with no tuner.

With these Magnavox dubbing units, I was actually able to copy most of my commercial vhs tapes. They did beautiful transfers and made it possible for me to hang on to these films. Replacing all on dvd was simply cost-prohibitive. In addition, so many of the movies I had on tape have never come out on dvd (Isadora with Vanessa Redgrave, Finnegan Begin Again with Mary Tyler Moore and Robert Preston, The Rolling Stones 25 X 5, the Beast of IRS and so many 80's bands video compilations, ALL of Live AID, starting with the Australia stuff that began in the wee hours our time, tapes and tapes of music videos, when MTV really showed music videos - I could go on and on.)

I actually accomplished this several years ago, but just never wrote a review. I know there have to be some people out there holding onto to vhs tapes, but not knowing a way out - here it is!

And, you can also convert dvd to vhs, but only if it is a non-commercial, non-copy protected dvd. I had taped and burned a couple of shows to dvd and a friend asked for a copy. When I tried to copy the dvd on my computer software, I found the original disc had errors. So, I copied the dvd to tape and then burned the tape back to dvd. VERY labor-intensive and would only do this for a really good friend, but it can be done with this unit.

If you are still holding on to commercial vhs tapes, give this a shot. It sure worked for me. In fact, it STILL works. I still have a stand-alone vcr, which I regularly use to tape movies and documentaries I like, but not enough to buy the dvd - and burn those tapes to dvd.
Excellant product for non tech savy people

I purchased this VCR/DVD combo to replace the exact model I had because I wanted a product I already knew how to use. I am not tech savy but I was able to always use this one with all it's fuctions even to record DVDS. The manual is also a little easier to understand than most. This model already has a tuner and you can hook it up to your existing cable without having to have a seperate tuner or using line in recording to use the VCR or watch your tapes or DVDs. It has in line but I have never used it so I can't comment on it. I have expanded cable with coxial hookup, so I am able to record one program and watch another which is another plus for me. I got the product almost a week before it was suppose to arrive and everything was with it that I had it hooked up in minutes. It was well packaged and didn't bust my budget like a DVD recorder with a digital tuner would have for me to be able to use. I was glad to find this model because it is rare to find as it's about 2 years old.
