Wooden shoe trees are the way to go.

I bought these shoe trees for my common projects after reading that many owners used shoe trees to extend the lives of their shoes.
I usually brush my shoes lightly with a little water if there are marks from wearing, dry them off and wait around 10 mins before installing the shoe tree. I have not noticed any significant creases since wearing my shoes 3-4 times a week.
Overall these do what they are supposed to although they run a little wide and are a bit expensive- the same week I got these in the mail I saw some almost identical ones at the nordstrom mens shoe department for around $12.
Imo $10-20 is still a small price to pay for maintaining $300+ leather shoes in great condition for years to come.

They are not an option

I have never used shoe trees, ever. Now I realize that is because I never had great quality shoes to begin with so I really never bothered with taking great care of them. I recently acquired my first pair of Allen Edmonds Park Avenue shoes and was blown away by the quality, it was at that moment that I realize what a quality shoe is and wanted to take the best care of it that I possibly could. So I ordered these shoe trees along with leather conditioner and polish from Allen Edmonds and I believe that that was the best thing I could have done for my shoes.
Comparing the Allen Edmonds after a month of use to my other shoes, I can clearly tell the difference the shoe trees and proper care are making. There is less creasing plus the leather is super soft and supple from the leather conditioner and regular polishing.
If you are buying quality shoes then shoe trees are not just an option they are a NECESSITY, buy them and make your shoes last decades.

The shoe trees work fine. I use these in a variety of 12 or 12.5 D shoes and they fit with no concerns. I use them in a few different style toed shoes and they work fine across different ones. They'll keep your shoes lasting longer and help them dry out after a long day of sweaty dogs in them at the office, and hold them into a good position so you can shine them.
The Allen Edmonds ones are $5 more than the other ones but have a little bit wider heel piece to keep that shaped properly, and are a little easier to get in and out than the $20 cedar ones with the strings in the back. I would pay the extra $5 for these.

I just bought a nice pair of Johnson & Murphy captoe leather oxford lace-up shoes and wanted to make sure that they last. The cedar shoe trees (although Allen Edmonds branded) work perfectly. After wearing the shoes all day, I slip the trees right into the shoes and the leather upper fits snug. (not too tight, not too loose)
I wear a size 13 regular shoe and purchased the X-Large. The cedar smell is not overwhelming, and fades slightly over the course of a week of continued use, but the wood works perfectly to keep any creases (caused from normal walking) from getting too deep or defined. A little time with the trees, and regular leather upkeep and polish will have your shoes lasting a long time.

A shoe's fountain of youth

I have used several different shoe trees and cedar ones are the way to go. These fit true to size and I use them for my dress and tennis shoes (although they form dress shoes the best.) My brother worked at Stride Rite and then Dillards and had several pairs of shoe trees from there and was always of the opinion that shoe trees were essential to the longevity of shoes. These Allen Edmonds shoe trees are the closest that I found to those and they do a wonderful job of keeping my shoes in form, smelling fresh (cedar vs smelly feet smell) and not damp. If you spend more than say $80 on a pair of shoes then these are definitely worth it. And unlike shoes, they dont wear out so you can keep this for essentially forever and make your shoes last seemingly forever as well. That is why I think my title regarding the fountain of youth is aptly put.
