Best cables for FWD van
Sarah✓ Verified Purchase•March 11, 2017
Best cables Best trip ever! Last year we bought cheap cables at Walmart, they kept falling off and scratched our car big time. This year we bought these cables instead and these are the best cables. I noticed that everyone had them in the mountains. There's so much snow at Mammoth this season that we had the cables on for 6 days and the cables made our trip a breeze. I didn't have to stress a bit and we drove with our van in 2 feet of deep snow. Our van is FWD and it's not easy to drive in the snow but with these cables, no problem at all. I highly recommend them. It was also easy to put them on and take them off. I used to lose my sleep over this because we have to drive up a steep hill from our condo in the mountains and we kept sliding last year and couldn't make it up. Not this year. The cables made it so easy.
Not bad - could use a bit more ability to tension on tires.

These are pretty easy to install, but you're at the mercy of their design / manufacturing tolerances. One chain is slightly looser than the other, and you really can't tighten these beyond what the elastic band does in that case, without some extra hardware of your own. So one of my wheels will loosely slap the pavement (and my wheel well) even at very low speeds.
But that seems to be the case with many chain sets, particularly at this price point - so all in all, not a terrible problem. They do seem to help in those situations where you really need them.

Perfect chains - try on and let them break in first.

I purchased two sets of these before a ski trip to Pagosa Springs, CO. Honestly, I was hoping I wouldn't need them - but with 15" of snow in one day while on the slopes, they were definitely needed to make our way down the pass.
While it was recommended to try them on. Edits the trip, I was hoping I wouldn't need them and could return them once we got back. So I didn't install them as a test before our trip to CO.
It took four people about 45 minutes to get the first one installed. Part of that was that my Suburban was in really deep snow, so we had to dig out around the tires quite a bit. The second one took about 10 minutes, but still a number of people to get it to connect. The inside connection and first outside connection went quickly. It was hard to get the last outside connection to join without really putting some effort into it.
They worked amazingly well in the snow and ice we encountered, but were quite loud and caused a lot of vibration on the normal roads. They quietness down quite a bit right at 30mph, which was the top speed we could do based on the recommendation of the chains.
We left them on for three days, as many of the roads we travelled were seldom plowed.
When I removed them, it looked like they may have stretched a little, which would make re-installation considerably easier. It would be nice for the manufacturer to state that, so I could have installed and driven with them some
before the trip, so they would be easier to put on in poor conditions.
They seem to be quite durable. I'm happy with the purchase and would recommend.

I haven't used these in the snow yet so my review doesn't cover how useful, or not, they would be under those conditions. I did put them on the front tires of my 2002 Toyota RAV4 to check the fit. I had no trouble putting them (and the tighteners) on or taking them off and the enclosed instructions, while brief, were clear and easy to understand. They appear to be a good fit as explained in the instructions. The carrying bag seems rugged enough, though getting the chains back in was a tight fit and I wish it were a tad larger. I can see that I will have to be careful about how I roll the chains up after every use if I want to get them in the bag.
Some reviewers posted that they stretched out the tighteners before putting them on which, to me, seems to defeat their purpose. I had no trouble putting them on as they are.
The enclosed pair of gloves are pretty thin plastic and I don't know how useful they will be for multiple uses so I will be replacing them with something more durable. All in all I am happy with this purchase. I got these for emergency use only since I very rarely drive anywhere where there is snow on the ground, but I will feel more comfortable having these with me if I feel like taking a drive up into the Sierras for whatever reason.

Definitely worth the extra cost, good set of cables.

Purchased two pairs of these for a 2004 accord and 2006 corolla to get through the out-of-the-ordinary snow & ice in the Portland area for the past week. We live in an area with many steep hills and no snow plow service, and these cables really saved the day a few times over. We were one of the few people in our neighborhood able to use our cars.
For the 2004 accord, these cables fit perfectly. For the 2006 corolla, they worked, but were a little loose. At one point, the cables came off the corolla because I hadn't been careful enough about securing the cable clips and I had to do a side-of-the-road re-fit. Outside of that, no complaints. Worked great and are some of the easiest cables I've ever installed.
