Very good, albeit not perfect for Dust Deputy use
Paul Doland✓ Verified Purchase•July 5, 2023
Many people are using these for a Dust Deputy. Most people give it a good review, though there are some complaints. Note that this wasn't designed for a Dust Deputy, so, it perhaps isn't perfect for the job. But still very good.
First, it is very sturdy. Stronger than a typical 5-gallon bucket. Someone complained the lid was "flimsy". No, it's quite strong, not flimsy at all. But it is slightly convex. Which isn't great. But, not really a big deal. Use some bolts and silicone caulk to attach the Deputy and it works fine. Not a problem at all.
Someone complained theirs had a malformed bottom that didn't stand stable. If that is the case, it is defective or damaged. The bottom to mine is slightly imperfect, but you certainly wouldn't notice it and stands perfectly fine.
Someone complained about the handles. They seem perfectly fine to me. If you really want, you could put some friction tape on the bottoms of the handles. Or even add your own handles. But, honestly, they seem perfectly fine to me.
The biggest disadvantage is that the lid is difficult to get off. It isn't really designed for frequent opening and closing. I'm thinking that maybe some plastic-safe lubricant might help. Even add a handle to the lid for pulling might help.
Note that the lid inserts into the drum about 1.5 inches. It probably seals reasonably well without even the ring clamp. I'm thinking maybe some snap-down side clasps might be quicker to open/close than the ring.
It would be nice if it was clear, but nobody seems to make anything like it clear. Some drum manufacturers make a "natural" color drum, meaning they didn't use dies and it is milky, slightly translucent. Like the top on this drum. But "natural" drums that I have found are more expensive than this drum and this drum is only available in yellow.
So, is this absolutely perfect for the job? No, but it is very good. I am happy with it.

Great container for dust collection.

Like many, I bought this for use with the dust deputy. The container is very rigid. The seems fairly durable, but based on recommendations, I cut out a 19 3/8 Dia piece of 3/4 MDF, cut a 12" dia price of seal materiel to go between the lid and mdf and then laid some gorilla glue between the layers and bolted it together after aligning fitment with the lock ring and lid centering. Once cured, I cut a 3 inch whole for mounting the dust deputy. It works amazingly well. If you are cutting a bunch of MDF, using for sanding or drywall dust collection, I recommend cleaning your vac hepa filter once this container is 1/3 full. Otherwise your vac hepa may start choking your vac. While this vessel is a perfect match for the dust deputy and its function, your Hepa is what catches the ultra fine (harmful dust) and still needs cleaned regularly to prevent shortening the life of your vac. For hardwood and ply cutting and routing you can fill the damn thing to the brim before dumping unless you also use it for sanding and ultra fine dust collection.
Great base for a Dust Deputy
Terrence Walsh✓ Verified Purchase•June 21, 2023
Used as a base to mount The Dust Deputy DIY Standalone Anti-Static Cyclone Separator . Worked perfectly. The lid is thick enough and has enough arch to stand up to the vacuum from either my Ridgid shop vac or Festool dust extractor. I had no problem with deforming or collapsing even when the pick-up hose clogged while the vacuum kept running.
Construction notes:
1. The bottom of the Dust Deputy needs a 3-inch hole in the drum lid. With a lot of patience and care the hole could be cut with a sharp utility knife but the plastic is thick. A hole saw is the way to go. I used Milwaukee 49-56-0173 3-Inch Ice Hardened Hole Saw mounted on DEWALT DW1803 Heavy Duty 7/16-Inch Shank Quick Change Mandrel (Fits Hole Saws 1-1/4-Inch - 6-Inch) .
2. For securing the Dust Deputy to the lid I used six 1/4-inch bolts and nuts, which worked fine. I also used washers on both sides and split washers with the nuts.
3. It helps to have gasketing between the Dust Deputy and the lid. I cut my own gasket from some shower pan sheet leftovers. That worked very well but took time. It would be quicker to use gasket-in-a-tube like an RTV sealant that is compatible with plastic, or a good caulk.
This is the second time I've mounted a Dusty Deputy on a drum. This yellow drum was better than my previous effort. This drum is wider, thus more stable. It's a bit shorter so doesn't get in the way as much. The capacity is amazing. The lid did not need any plywood reinforcement. I like the handles, too.
My previous Dust Deputy was mounted on Eagle 1610MB Blue High Density Polyethylene Lab Pack Drum with Metal Lever-lock Lid, 14 gallon Capacity, 26.5" Height, 15" Diameter . That worked fine. The blue drum is narrower and gets through doorways more easily. The blue drum's lid needed reinforcement where the yellow drum's lid was already strong enough. The blue drum has no handles while the yellow drum's handles really help when it's time to empty it.
I hope this helps someone who's trying to improve their dust collection.

I paired this with a powertec 1 micron dust bag. I'm definitely pleased with my setup and product.
