The hinge J-bolt is 4.5" long and sticks out 1". The 6 lag screws for the hinge are 3.5" long and you will need 1/2" socket. Pre-drill all the holes. Someone posted to make sure to check that hinges are perpendicular to the gate or in my case a window shutter. I used a level on the J-bolt to make sure it was straight up and down before installing the hinge. This hinge allows for removal of the shutters from the windows after opening. I purchased and installed six sets of hinges (12), they installed easy, look great after installation, and I would buy them again.
