Durable and great fit

I LOVE this bike rack! There are already lots of good positive reviews to browse with useful tips, so I'm going mention that I'm really pleased with the durability and value. I've used it mostly just to get my bike to the local bike trails in my area quickly so I haven't used it for long trips. But I've been using it since 2010 with no problems. Usually I'll only have one bike but it works well with two on my little car. And though it isn't difficult to get on the back of my Kia, I often just left it on the car in all kinds of weather to save time. It's still in good shape and I would heartily recommend this bike rack.

If you read nothing else that I write here, read this: This rack was the very best choice I could have made for my Car and my Bike. Excellent match. No Damage to either Bike or Car. No loosening enroute, never had to be tightened. No wobble. No wheel spin. No shake, No bounce. Drove about 1400 miles from Los Angeles>Austin Texas through several rain storms...some blinding. Wind conditions that were pushing around the 18-wheelers in front of me. No matter. No Problems. Now if you're interested in some details, read on...and too, I've even, for the 1st time, included some photos so you can see how I made small custom adjustments to fit the needs of my Bike-Auto combo.

So after combing thru the Comments here on all of the Bike Racks that I was considering, and visiting a few local Bike shops in my area, I finally decided to purchase this one from amazon warehouse. Yes folks, a "return" that I had to wait for, but it arrived, as amazon promised, 2 days prior to my departure date. The rack had minor scuffs that were immaterial and there was no manual but that was un-important as the rack attachment is very simple to visualize. The challenge was how to securely apply this rack to my 2000 Saab 9-5.

The 1st thing I noticed was that each of the 1" nylon straps were very long. I resisted cutting anyone one of them shorter, although I thought that I would shorten them eventually. I opened the rack to what I thought would be an approximate fit and placed the top 2-feet on the trunk and the bottom 2-feet on the bumper. But that didn't look right as the bars that held the bike were sloping downward. I wanted the Bike to tilt into the car a bit and so I readjusted the rack several times (without the Bike) lifting the bike up each time until I achieved the angle I was looking for. I also decided at this time to make 2 adjustments to my bike that were "key" to my success: I removed the seat-n-post, and I removed the 2 pedals. Buy a pedal wrench, they're inexpensive and this will save the car finish...read the distressed Comments. No Seat cleared my rearview vision.

Once I had the correct frame configuration, I began tightening the straps. The rubberized clamps at the top & bottom of the Trunk stopped sliding and held fast, then I tightened them a bit more. I tested w/ the Bike on and retightened a bit more. I centered the Rack on the car and centered the Bike on the Rack. I had little but equal overhang on each side of the car. Nothing to be concerned about when parking.

The one strap that confused me was the very looooong strap at the very top between the 2-feet near the rear window. What was it for? How to use it?
I couldn't see a reason for it's location. I considered many options, but, Finally I made the decision to re-position it and that meant cutting it off the top bar. I examined my decision carefully and knew I could cut the strap from the bar without destroying it. Once I did that, I put the strap around the lower bar of the rack below the license plate and that was key to the stability I enjoyed. That move pulled together the entire arrangement into an incredibly strong, stable, shock resistant application for my Bike-Car combo.

I added velcro straps, a bungee cord, a heavy red folded cotton cloth between the bumper and the Crank, and a large cable-lock thru the Frame and through a tow-loop under the rear of the car...

Well that's it. I hope the photos provide some extra explanation for you. After this experience, I believe that you can carry your Bicycle(s) safely & securely with minimal scuffing if you take a little time to customize the bike-vehicle configuration.

note// I've added 6 photos but they are not all correctly showing as one or more are sideways or upside down. I can't seem to change them so I give them to you as is and hope you can somehow deal with them...good luck

The first time I installed the rack it scratched the trunk of my car. There are two screws on the frame that face the car (that I didn't see) and when I was putting the lower pads on the bumper, as was featured in the picture in the instructions (apparently my car needed the pads positioned higher on the license plate), the screws were resting on my trunk unbeknownst to me. While adjusting the straps, the screws were digging into my trunk and scratching the paint. After I installed the rack and saw the angle of the arms was pointing downward instead of either parallel or angled upward, that's when i began re-installing the rack and saw the scratches. Unfortunately these aren't surface scratches that can be buffed out. The damage is real and would require a paint job and some money to repair.

UPDATE 1: So I attempted to install the rack again on another day and got it right this time, however I noticed after doing all the adjustments that the left upper strap clip does not securely hold the strap in place. After adjusting it a couple of times, I noticed the strap still had a little slack and the clamp wasn't holding it in place as the other five straps were. I put my Schwinn women's MTB 26 on the rack and found that the arm straps don't fit on my bike frame at the front end so I can't have the bike level. Lastly, i tried to put my son's 16' BMX style bike on the rack and his frame was too short to go on both arms.

I will have to try again angling one of the wheels downward on my bike and see if that will work and someone else wrote something about getting creative to get her child's bike on rack and see if that's an option. If neither of these work, back it goes.

UPDATE 2: So I tried for a third time tonight and the rack does not work for my bike because the bottom bar is too tall for the strap to fit over and get secured to the frame. Also, the reason the top left strap doesn't stay tight is because the clip was installed on the rack on the wrong side. Unfortunately this is going back and I'm back to the drawing board.
Nice system overall, 5 stars. Excellent product.

Installed easily (Took a couple of minutes to think, but otherwise, great). Instructions were like 5 steps, written clear, & well.
It fit on the trunk of my Infiniti G37X like a charm! Not only does it provide the bottom straps (bottom of trunk lid), Top (ridge of trunk by window), and side (Side of Trunk lid), but it also comes with a safety strap that wraps all the way around the trunk lid (Thru the Inside, around to the outside). So if any of the straps did ever unhook, which I doubt, the safety strap would prevent my bike from flying down the highway. The 6 straps used to tie down the bike to the rack, were made of a very strong rubber. I can't imagine these will wear, or break for many years. I can still open my trunk all the way open without breaking my rear windshield.
The bike slid right over the rack easily to get into position, and fit in its slot nicely. Strapping down was relatively simple (except requires some force slipping the hole in the rubber straps over the nipples, but i suppose it's necessary to keep it firm). I haven't done it, but 3 bikes will fit on here easily! Be sure to navigate to [...] and check the 'Fit Guide' to ensure this model will fit. I almost purchased another model (I clicked Buy), but decided to check Hollywood's website, and they had the Fit Guide. It wouldn't have fit my car, so found this model (Which is better anyways). Luckily I caught in time to cancel, and order this one.

Nice system overall, 5 stars. Excellent product.
Scratched the heck out of my new car

Rotten product. This rack scratched the crap out of my black 2014 Honda Accord. I was very careful to install correctly and have plenty of experience with bike racks, yet one of the lower foam pads split straight up the middle during my 200 mile drive from Phoenix to LA making it so that the metal rack was rubbing straight onto my car's surface. Hollywood Rack's defective padding single handedly cost me nearly $1,000 in resurfacing and paint on my less than 1 year old car. This is a rotten product. Unless your car is already dented and scratched or you don't mind spending thousands of dollars to repair your vehicle, keep looking for an alternative mode of bike transport.
