since reviews were either excellent or awful

Working well so far. I asked my plumber before buying, since reviews were either excellent or awful. He said these are generally good if you get the right size for your usage. I was glad I hired him to put it in, since it came in what looked like a million pieces.
Had to purchase EXPENSIVE parts after very limited use.

I would not recommend this product! It was used for 4 years and I had trouble with the amount of water in the brine tank the whole time. The product is poorly engineered with too many parts that fail. The customer service people are NOT knowledgeable about the product. The company seems to make a crappy product and then make MORE money on the severely overpriced parts they sell you to fix it. View my photos of poor workmanship and failed parts.
My Waterboss #700 didn't even last a year

COMPLETE GARBAGE!! ***Warning***
My Waterboss #700 didn't even last a year and the plunger broke and the top of the tank broke. The manufacturer I spoke with said they don't replace the tanks. The sent me a parts repair kit that I cannot use because the top of the tank broke. The argue with you about what you need to repair their garbage! SICK. I will spare you the waste of time. Don't buy!

Don't bother. Looks like it has great bells and whistles, but don't believe it. Just more parts to break down, and they WILL break down. I literally replaced every moving part on this thing, and it still didn't work. Every time I called (which was a painful experience), they told me I needed a new part. Still nothing. Finally they told me I could return all the parts for a partial refund. This stupid thing took me 8 weeks of frustration and a loss of $300. In the end, the satisfaction of throwing it in the trash was worth it. I never want to hear the word "WaterBoss" again!!!!!!

The overall concept of the Waterboss is great if it worked as well as it appears to be designed. Unfortunately, I am not one to learn from my mistakes. I am on my second Waterboss softener after owning one about 15 years ago, which lasted about 8 years. I switched to a Whirlpool, which lasted about 7 years, and decided to go back to Waterboss. I thought after 20 years that maybe Waterboss would make some improvements over the one I had before since I wasn't real happy with the Whirlpool only lasting about 7 years. When the Waterboss works properly, it is a very efficient water softener which uses salt sparingly and has a fast regeneration cycle. However, there are some design and reliability problems with this softener. The design problems are mostly related to the computer timer. It is supposed to work in either Demand or Delay Mode. Demand Mode will cycle the softener when the water usage reaches a point where the softener detects it needs to run. Delay Mode is supposed to wait until a designated time to cycle the softener when usage reaches a point where a cycle needs to happen. Unfortunately, the Waterboss completely ignores Delay Mode most of the time and cycles whenever it feels like it. This has caused me a lot of frustration because I do not want it to cycle during showers or when the washing machine is running. This causes hard water to fill my hot water tank during the cycling. Hence, I only want it to cycle in the middle of the night. I have complained about this to Waterboss and they keep trying to justify the reason for the softener to ignore my setting. If it is going to ignore the Delay Mode setting, then why have it at all?!!! Another problem I am having is that periodically the brine water will not get drawn into the tank during cycling and I end up with a water softener that is filled to the rim with water. Waterboss keeps telling me I have to clean out the injector. I've done this a lot and it hasn't helped. Why doesn't the injector clean itself as part of the cycling process? I have also had times when the water tastes salty, after a regeneration. This has me very concerned and I wonder how much salt is getting into my water supply. This should not happen, but I was once again told to clean the injector by their customer support. I am tired of having to baby this thing to keep it working. I will likely not buy another Waterboss softener again because of both the reliability issues and the computer timer design issues.
