Moisturizes Great but that "Unscented" Smell...
Doc of Occ Med✓ Verified Purchase•August 7, 2023
It's now 2023 and I've been using this stuff for years. It works! Unfortunately, the "unscented" smell has gotten more pungent over the years IMO. The most recent bottle (not bought on Amazon) smell almost made me nauseated and I was thinking I would have to find another moisturizer. As a last ditch, I bought some essential lavender oil (Siva, in this case) and started slowly adding drops to the bottle. Starting with a 20 oz bottle of Amlactin, I think I probably added 20+ drops to mask the lotion smell just enough without also being overwhelmed by lavender scent. I will agree that unscrewing the pump to get it to "pop up" must require a degree in mechanical engineering. Those of us without said degree use the universal approach for success, i.e., twisting the "unpopped" spout this way and that, rotating in each direction around and around while pushing down or pulling up. (Then comes the swearing and sweating and more rigorous maneuvers.) After couple minutes, it (usually) gives way and pops up although I have no idea what made it do so. That means it's "Groundhog Day", for the next bottle opening. Otherwise, a good product.
THIS LOTION HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! (Eczema)
Y. Wang✓ Verified Purchase•July 30, 2023
The sounds like a giant hyperbole, I know. But this is really the most accurate way I can describe this product and what it's done for me, so as far as I'm concerned, it's true!
I've had pretty terrible eczema all my life. I've tried all sorts of medicine including herbal remedies to little or no effect. As I grew up I just learned to live with it and accept it as a part of my life. Winters in the northeast were terrible - itching, dry flaky skin, redness, etc. My skin would get so dry and red it would crack and bleed. On any given day in January I would almost always have some sort of open or healing wound on my skin. My face and scalp is constantly flaking and shedding. Not only was this painful, this did a number of my self esteem as people would constantly assume that I didn't shower or I was just gross. I became very ashamed of my skin and simply didn't talk about it even to my regular doctors.
Fast forward to my late twenties when I got a good job and I paid for great health insurance. I took it upon myself to see a dermatologist and among many other creams and topical ointments, she recommended me Amlactin as a daily moisturizer. At first I was extremely skeptical as I have literally tried every lotion and cream worth its salt on the market. I've paid ridiculous amounts of money for tiny jars of expensive exotic creams with promises of eczema and psoriasis relief only to be left with dozens of partially used bottles of useless crap lying around the house. Literally everything felt great being lathered on after a shower but within a few hours even the thickest creams rubbed off or evaporated to the point as if I've put no lotion on at all.
Imagine my surprise when after a long day, I come home and realized my skin was as soft and smooth as the morning when I put this lotion on. This was a real winner. My skin has never been this soft or smooth. I've never had a winter where I wasn't a walking scab! No more blisters or cracked skin! I could actually take off my clothes in a pool or hot tub and not feel the staring eyes of people! This stuff is AMAZING! I literally bought another bottle two weeks into my first bottle for fear of the company discontinuing this stuff! (It did not).
This lotion works by having a small amount of lactic acid. It will dissolve the top layer of dead skin and work its way DEEP INTO your skin, not just cover it up. Once you put it on, it gets in there - really REALLY gets in there and stays there. The acid does burn a little but it's not terrible pain but a slight tingling sensation and wayyyy more tolerable than blisters or bleeding cracks. The result is smoothness - like butter in the hot sun smoothness. I will touch my skin hours after treatment and wonder if it belongs to me because it feels so foreign!
The lotion is fairly pricey, around $22-25 a bottle, but you get a BIG 20z bottle! Not some dinky two squirt bottle. This thing will last me about two months in the winter (I use it about 2x every day for full body coverage) and 3-4 months in other seasons. For around $100 a year, I can deal with the price.
There is some slight burning/tingling sensation when you use it. Some people report burning, I don't find it bothersome or painful. Whatever sensations I get with this usually subsides within a few minutes anyways. If you use this on an open cut though, it will sting.
As mentioned above, AMLACTIN does eat away a a layer of dead skin so it is helpful for keratosis pilaris (KP), which I also have as a result of the eczema. My arm and legs which have the most KP are a lot clearer since I started using Amlactin due to the dead skin cells being dissolved away. I'm still working on the rest of my body but I feel like I have new skins!
While they don't recommend using this, I have when I didn't have my face ointment available and the results are usually better than my RX facial ointment. The tingling/burning sensation is a bit worse on your face than body as your face is more sensitive.
The smell does take some time to get used to. It has an acidic smell to it. It's not terribly strong, but given the alternatives I'll take it. It usually subsides within a few minutes anyways.
In short, BUY THIS LOTION!

Excellent, But Definitely NOT Fragrance-Free, lol
Gomershad✓ Verified Purchase•July 27, 2023
Without hesitation my dermatologist recommended AmLactin for my medicine-induced severe dry/flaky skin. This stuff is great! It solved the dry/flaky problem, is NOT greasy/shiny like Eucerin and its store brands. It really does a great job. HOWEVER, it is NOT fragrance-free. It has a strange fragrance that's, well... it's not really UNpleasant, but then again, it's not all that pleasant, either. My wife said it makes me smell like a Hazelnut Yankee Candle, lol. That fragrance lasts a couple hours, at least. I guess I don't mind smelling like a hazelnut candle, but it does interfere with my really expensive colognes!! But, hey, my skin is now pain-free, so....

This lotion is expensive and doesn't absorb well. It's a little greasy.
