Not Appropriate for Precision Work on Modern Engines
Kevin GainerDecember 3, 2017
Update to original review below: After returning the instrument described below, I bought Fowler's 52-646-500 which has much better accuracy and appears to be suitable for engine work. I got the instrument a few days ago and tried it out and am happy with it. Good repeatability and it does appear to be measuring correctly as a "comparator" based on some cross-checks I did. So, while this inexpensive unit (below) is not appropriate for MODERN engines, Fowler's other gauge, the 52-646-500, is fine. Obviously, though if you are in the 1%, buy the Mitutoyo gauge but I guess people who are in the 1% don't rebuild their own engines (LOL).

Would be nice if Fowler or Amazon were aboveboard and honestly and OPENLY disclosed in the advertising that the accuracy of this gauge is only plus or minus .0009 inches, and repeatability is only guaranteed to be within plus or minus .0004 inches which values essentially make this "measuring" tool useless for any actual precision work on a modern engine where, say, the allowed out of round is .0004!! Got item in mail yesterday and returning it today. This should not be marketed for precision work. Had it been OPENLY discloses in plain ENGLISH that the error is so large, I would have been alerted that it is not appropriate for my intended use and all the waste involved in shipping it back and forth could have been avoided. These manufacturers and their representatives should be bending over backwards to DISCLOSE the RELEVANT facts regarding a product and I shouldn't have to engage in games trying to find the data. This sort of outcome is frankly habitual and is one of the reasons this country sucks. At any rate, if you are measuring an engine cylinder you need a gauge with a total accuracy much, much better than the .0009 in. that Fowler only BELATEDLY discloses once the product is actually in your mailbox and by then it's too late.
Works, but expensive, even though looks almost exact same as cheap generic

This works. However, there is not much label indicating it's a Fowler other than the indicator. One of the metal tab on top of the dial indicator fell off when I received it. The case has some empty slot, which is kind of confusing whether something was missing or not.

Compared with "no name/labeled" unit with less than half the price, I took out 2 stars as a result.
Nice Bore gauge
TerryAugust 17, 2017
Nice Bore gauge, As noted elsewhere there should be 3 blank spaces for the anvils, the 2 smallest of each type are shipped fitted to the heads, one (the longest) is not there in the inch set = 3 blank spaces. Having said that mine came with one missing, not a real problem as the return/reorder process is so simple.
Only beef I have is that the anvils are not marked, and as the box is not great at keeping them in place its easy to mix up the smallest 2-6" ones with the 1.4- 2" Though a quick measurement will sort those out it would have been nice to have the size or number on the anvil.
