I've had pretty good luck with other Ridgid products
Timothy G.•November 24, 2017
I purchased this item directly from Home Depot for a chair making project. I used it very lightly during the first 12 months. Then, the motor started humming during start-up. Eventually, it completely seized and started smoking. I forgot to register the darned thing, now I'm just kind of stuck with it.
I've had pretty good luck with other Ridgid products, but this one is by far the worst. I should have read the reviews here on Amazon instead of those at the Home Depot website. Live and learn, I guess...

Stay away - most new units may be defective...

Beware - Home Depot Censors reviews on their website. I purchased this oscillating sander from a nearby Home Depot only to have it self destruct in 5 seconds. While I did find SEVERAL bad reviews with the same issue that I had, Home Depot REJECTED my review for being negative. In my conclusion, you cannot trust reviews on their site.
DO NOT buy this unit, they are defective and even if they work, they may not last long. Here is EXACTLY what I wrote as my experience and was rejected.

"STAY AWAY FROM NEW UNITS!
"Stay away from 2016 units! Well, I just drove to my nearest Home Depot 50 miles away and one of my purchases was this sander. After assembling the unit and cutting up the box, I plugged the unit in, and all I heard was a hum. I spun the spindle with my hand and it slowly started turning and then it popped and started to smoke. Shame on me, I should have read the reviews and how many people have had multiple bad units! My original intention was that I had a anomaly, however; after reading the reviews of people having two and three bad units in a row, I am convinced that these units are defective. You will either get one that is DOA or it will not last long. Rigid MUST know that these units are defective and is doing nothing to pull them off of the shells. If you are willing to try and retrofit a new motor in these units go for it, otherwise, just stay away!"

3 New Units in a Row Fail to Start - Cannot recommend at this time.
Bruce Dehm•February 27, 2016
Purchased and returned 3 of these from 3 different Home Depot Stores because the when plugged-in and turned-on, the motor only hums. The first two I thought it was me doing something wrong. The third time I asked the store employees to test the unit before I purchased it. The four of us could not get the motor to run on a brand-new, out-of-the-box until unless you spun the shaft by hand. Even the Home Depot employees recommended I not buy it. All the HD Associates laughed when someone mentioned we could call the 1-800 help line. IMHO, looks like an under-powered capacitor on the motor.
Where there's smoke.............
Paul Edgar•December 5, 2015
No option for less than 1 star! I don't need one of these often, but I did some research and picked this one to try. Home Depot has them for $199.00. I used the manual for the minimal assembly and set up, it' not a very robust unit, but as I mentioned, I don't do much inside curve sanding. Well all that was left was to free the cord, plug it in and throw the switch........... motor just jerked and grunted and let the factory smoke out. Once the factory smoke has been released, you can't put it back in. This one gets repackaged and returned to HD.
Wish for better quality control

I've had my eye on this sander for quite sometime and was really exited to own one but kept putting it off for a while. I finally decided to buy one from HD (unsure why it is being sold here at such a high price) and drove an hour and a half for it. Once I got it home it worked like a charm for a small molding project I was doing. Unfortunately, the following day the motor would not turn but rather made a buzz noise (as other people have stated too). I though maybe it was because I had not cleaned it from the day prior so I tried giving it a quick clean, surprisingly that worked and the sander continued to work. About two weeks went by with out touching it when another project came up to required the use of this machine. Once again the motor would not spin and made the buzz noise. I tried turning it on and off a couple of times to see if it did something, then some smoke started to come out, so I disconnected it. I then proceeded to grab the shaft and manually turn it to see if it was stuck, it was not. Next, I lifted the motor from the shaft as it would when it was running to see if that was the issue, again nothing it seemed to be fine. Last, I plugged it back in and magically it started working and I was able to finish my small project for that day. After, I decided that there was no way I would keep this table sander if I needed to do that every time I wanted to use it, at least not for $199 plus tax, so I drove back 1.5 hrs (one way) to return it. It is really too bad that I was not able to get one like one ones that the 5 star raters have talked about, maybe I will give it another try next year. I gave this product a two stars rather than one because I really did like it when it worked (or I made it work).
Pros
Two sanders in one
Fast and Efficient (when it works)
Nice flat surface
Storage for add-ons and adjustment tools
Cons
Unreliable motor
When using the belt, only the bottom section gets used (this is an easy fix if you get a belt that direction does not matter so you can flip it over)
CAUTION: No lifetime warranty if you buy from a non-Ridgid dealer like HD
I hope this review was helpful.
