I agree with others that the squirrels try to minimize spin time, and grab kernels in their mouth then retreat to the top to munch, and they do go through 3 cobs in less than a day - but I've seen up to 8 squirrels in my back yard. However our squirrels also will hang on here upside down and eat. I still get quite a bit of joy, and my cats watch in fascination while the squirrels eat. We've had one of these for 8 years or so, and attached ours to a 4x4 post in our back yard. In humid Houston the wood dowels rot over time, but the nice thing is you can replace it with a 1/2 inch dowel and a long screw on the end. I supplement this with squirrel-dedicated tube feeders filled with deer corn that slows them down a bit...

I've been through a dozen different squirrel whirlers. They typically last a week, and then one night some larger creatures will dismantle the device and render it useless. This Squirrel A Whirl is so simple and well put together that I am betting it will be here long after I am gone. I do not know who has the most fun, my wife and I or the squirrels? Well worth the money, and probably the last furry feeder I will ever buy....

We get a kick out of watching the squirrels use this thing. The other day we were watching two of them try to balance it out by gradually working their way from the center toward the tips. It was hilarious. I did take the time to paint all of the wooden surfaces and the metal surfaces to minimize damage from the elements.
