The great thing is that this stuff lasts forever
J. Smithe•November 6, 2014
Wow! This is a lot of tamarind. The only thing i really use this for is making pad thai sauce, and a little of this goes a long way. I find i have to dilute the paste with a 3 parts water to 1 part tamarind to get it right for mixing. The stuff goes far and you get a lot of it. I really need to find some more uses for the stuff because you really get quite a bit and the price cant be beat. I dont know if i'll ever run out of the stuff. The great thing is that this stuff lasts forever. If anyone knows of any other good recipes to use this in, feel free to let me know.
This stuff is great. Its nice and sour with a hints of citrus flavors. What more could you ask for?

Convenient, but bitter

After many years of putting up with the hassle of dealing with so-called "seedless" wet tamarind, I finally decided to try this concentrate. The good news is it is totally free of the seeds, seed hulls, and pod parts that plague wet tamarind. It's also extremely thick and concentrated. Unfortunately it seems to have been concentrated by boiling or heating, which is probably the source of the bitter quality it has, reminiscent of molasses.
After softening traditional wet tamarind pulp with minimal amounts of hot water, I can add about 1/2 as much (by volume) of sugar to make a delicious tangy sauce. I find I need to add about 4x as much (by volume) sugar to each measure of this paste, in contrast. Even diluted in this way it is not as tasty because of the bitter notes. I'm torn between the convenience and the bitterness, sadly. I'll keep looking for a better solution.

So good and convenient

If you don't want to tear through a block of tamarind (and try to get all of the pulp and seeds out of said block...) this fits the bill. This is delicious and very concentrated, so, you only have to use about a teaspoon to get that little bit of sour/sweet oompf that tamarind lends to a dish. The consistency is smooth with no lumps or funky chunky bits.
Great Product

This is a great product. Exactly what I used when I was in Thailand. Tamarind is great for a wide range of cooking uses that is not limited to just Thai food. It's also rumored to be good for cleansing your body of excess fluoride. This order was for a pack of six which is great because I can use the punctured jar for polishing my brass lamps - it works try it!
My only complaint, indicated above, is that the packaging was not sufficient for keeping the jars from being damaged. I had two of six jars arrive with puncture wounds that resulted in a sticky mess all over the other jars. Luckily this product has other uses than cooking so it's not a big deal to me in this case.

No taste

It has taken me a while to write this review.
When I first used it, I was kind of surprised that it did not have any aroma. I was not familiar with tamarind, just read about it. So I did not know what to look for. I continued to use it, thinking it must be adding something "intangible", though I did not know what. I was disappointed, but did not think the product was defective.
Then I received a jar of tamarind paste as a gift, and whoa! The explosion of flavor! Tamarind actually smells and tastes like something! Then I bought some tamarind chutney at whole foods, and the same thing -- an intense delicious taste that makes all the descriptions make sense.
So I don't know if this product I received was just old, or bad quality, or a total scam. Either way, it is not the tamarind paste you are looking for.
It is too late for me to do anything about my purchase, but if I can save someone else from making the same mistake I did, then this review will be worth it.
