Finest I have ever purchased!

These may be the very best sharpening stones I have ever purchased! I've yet to try, I'm awaiting a short Japanese-style sword to arrive. But handling these, somehow I could feel the high quality of a fine stone from both of the boxes. I will update if necessary, believe it.

looks well made, wooden box is really fragile, although it is a nice looking one. have yet to sharpen a knife with it
good 3k stone for a beginner

i picked this stone up as part of a starter set i put together for a friend who is getting into freehand sharpening but didnt want to go all out on high end stones.

i was very curious about this stone when i first came across it. i've now had a chance to use it and can say it's a very good 3000 stone. it felt a bit strange on my first try. the stone's feedback felt a bit hard or something, but there was no denying the final edge was super sharp! i soaked it for about 20 minutes and that seemed to work fine.

i'd recommend this stone to anyone looking for a budget finishing stone. the size fits the price so it is rather small for larger kitchen knives. i finished an 8" cook knife without much problem though. for smaller paring knives, petty knives or EDC blades its a pretty effective stone. definitely good for a beginner not looking to break the bank.

PROS: price is right. it is a stand alone stone so i like that. good results on edge sharpness

CON: small size, thin. it has an odd tactile feel to begin with, but i have a feeling the stone will get better with age
Great set

I am still getting used to the idea that sharpening stones cost a lot of money, but I think this is a really nice set. I got it to sharpen my kitchen/chef knives, but will also use on folding/camping knives and even straight edge razors (I do also have a 12K grit stone for the razors to polish them).

Before I got this I thought that all sharpening stones looked like the two-sided stone I got from a hardware store for a couple of bucks. That one just has "coarse" and "fine" sides. Not bad to sharpen a hatchet or a big outdoor-type knife, but I wanted something more refined. I just got a damascus steel chef knife and wanted something decent for it.

Perhaps I will update this review as I use them more.

after much practice I've managed to get a razor edge on 2 knives.. I have a few more than need some work, but I'm loving getting the experience in with these stones. So you might not want to start by messing with expensive steel, maybe practice on some cheaper knives first. They come in little pine boxes and although one of mine had a piece cracked off (nowhere to be found, must have came from the company that way) they are VERY good quality. For the price I honestly expected a little less. people have mentioned the logo on the 1k grit causing problems, but it doesn't appear to make any difference in the grit of the stone?

Only other think I can suggest is getting a honing steel if you don't already have one. It makes a difference after the final step and getting your knife to stay sharp!
