My 50 Merc 4 stroke cavitation plate is not flat on the underside but it is nearly flat on top. I cut away the excess material that was not allowing the tail to rest forward. I re-drilled the two holes I cut away. That's the first 3 pics. The last 4 are of the finish. At the lake it responded well. Before the tail installation it was sluggish to get on plane but afterward it came up much faster. I've no tach or trim indicator on my 16' Super Guide but I did gain 2 mph watching the speedo. I've not turned it sharply like I used to do my trihull but it did turn more flatly. Overall I'm happy with the Davis Instrument Whale Tail.
Works on 12ft 30hp tender

Transformed my bow up runabout bullfrog 11.5! Gets on plane and can be run 28mph vs 25mph. Bow down and no need to play around with trim so much. Rides level. Big improvement..
doesn't fit 2021 Mercury 115hp without modification

Sturdy solid aluminum plate. Had to modify for the steering trim tab and open slot to fit around lower unit. Replaced 1/4" fasteners with 5/16" stainless steel.
Finally got my 22' Pontoon boat out on the river today. Prior to installing the Whale Tail I experienced terrible ventilation issues at any RPM above 3000. With the whaltail I ran 6000 @ 29mph. NO venting/cavitation.!!!!
Had the pontoon out again, this time with 6 adults aboard. Ran fantastic. Excellent fuel economy, I highly recommend it to anyone having ventilation/cavitation issues with their pontoon. Ours is a 2001 Crest Super Fish, 25" logs, 2021 115 hp Mercury 4 stroke, not Big Foot, 2.07:1, 13.5" x 15p x 3 bladed prop.

Works. Helps keep nose down for better hole shot with skiers.

My boat is azz heavy with tiller setup, kicker, three battery's and small fuel tank. Add me and could not keep it on plane faster than 15mph alone. Would be dangerous anything above that proposing would start at 26-27mph and just get bad.
I modified the plate as well so I could mount a bit fwd, used three fasteners on each side. Lost 1mph in top end, 25mph but doesn't matter I could never maintain anything above 15 anyway, even if I had someone in the bow it was 17mph that I'd maintain.
I have to keep motor trimmed in, manybe a tad out if it's calm but there is way more control on bow now.
I have 40hp Merc, 3cyl efi 20" shaft in 650lb 17' fishrite fishmaster, utility fishing hull
My 25hp did not porpoise the hull, it is 100lbs lighter so it must be a weight issue.
9-12-20
Moved some weight fwd, I can almost crack 30mph with it now at 5200' on a 12" stainless 3 blade.
Still works great. I did get rid of the stainless 7/16 bolts and replaced with 1/4" Allen machine screws with new lock nuts. Figure the round head lowers a bit of drag.
