Keep looking. Don't buy one of these shovels.

I am really disappointed in this shovel. It claims to be ergonomically designed. The shovel bucket is VERY heavy, and is not balance by the very short and light handle. I am a 6', 200 lb man, and I find it awkwardly heavy to wield, and WAY too short (think, bend WAY over). It's probably durable, but it's so unpleasant to use, who cares?
For heavy ice and wet snow

Bring on the snow and Ice, I'm ready!

So the winter of 2013-2014 has been brutal. If you live in a place that can get snow and ice then you got it this year. The cheap plastic shovels just can't take the heavy stuff or are to flimsy to break up the ice. The back savers although easier on the back, are awkward to use and still aren't really made for ice or heavy snow. Some of these devices are well over $100, I'm sure they are good, but I was looking for something bullet proof and this is it!

Quality:

This is a Made in the USA steel shovel. It has a poly handle which is a special blend of fiberglass that is extremely flexible yet rock solid. It has a hearty weight to it due to the all steel scoop, It is not a shovel for the weak. Baring some odd structural flaw this shovel should last a very very long time. In the event it breaks it comes with a lifetime warranty and the company that makes it has been around for over 70 years.

Value:

Because this is a steel shovel it can be used for much more then snow. I will be using it in summer months for moving dirt when planting/weeding. I've seen people use shovels of this type for coal , gravel and grain as well. Although not for digging holes this shovel is good for just about anything else. With its large scoop and solid construction its uses are limitless.

In Use:

Ice is not a problem, neither is snow. If your strong enough to lift it, this shovel can take it. Use it like a battle axe and crack that ice! You will give out way before the shovel ever does. This shovel has a short handle which forces you to use it as if your choking up on a larger handled shovel (like when lifting heavy loads). If your clearing large driveways of snow/ice your going to feel it in the morning so this may not be the shovel for you. For smaller areas like driveways less then 20ft, patios and walking paths this will do just fine. For uses other then snow (like gravel, grain, dirt) you shouldn't run into issues at all.

Since not all snow storms drop 8-12 inches this can be a pain when only clearing 1-2 inches of snow. In that case a cheap plastic shovel would be a good investment for little storms leaving this as the heavy hitter when the need arises.

** About the handle size **

As another reviewer pointed out, this shovel has a short handle. This is by design as this shovel design is expecting you to be lifting a heavy load. With a shovel of any length when lifting a heavy load you will choke up on the handle to get the most power out of the lift. This has the negative effect of causing you to bend over when clearing material that is ground level (like snow). Of course the taller you are the more bending you will have to do. Having a low center of gravity (i.e. being shorter) is a bonus in this case. If your moving material from the back of a pickup truck or a large pile then this length is perfect regardless of your height.

Even being shorter myself I wouldn't mind having an extra 12" to the handle, however I feel that the 48" classic would just be to long for my needs which is primarily moving heavy snow/slush and breaking up and clearing ice.

Overall:

This shovel is not for the frail! If your in decent shape this shovel should serve you well. It's rock solid and should last a lifetime. It makes a great addition to your winter weather arsenal with the added benefit of being useful for many other non-snow related tasks.
