Great tool
Only Performs Half The Job On 1996-2000 Chrysler 3.3L's
BackYardMechanic•June 8, 2015
This set provides the proper puller for 1996-2000 Chrysler 3.3L V6's, used in their 3rd generation Caravan/Voyager minivans, to remove the harmonic balancer. It is USELESS, however, for installation of the harmonic balancer. There is no M10 x 1.50 adapter for the threaded crankshaft hole provided and the forcing bolt is too big in diameter (7/8") to fit through the center hole in the harmonic balancer. What is needed is an adapter with 4" of M10 x 1.50 rod on one end , to engage the threads in the snout of the crankshaft and provide clearance for the uninstalled harmonic balancer, as well as 1" of 5/8" UNF 18 TPI on the other end to screw into the end of the forcing bolt.
Fortunately, I caught this BEFORE I removed the harmonic balancer, since I would not have been able to install the new one with this kit. Currently waiting on some M10 x 1.50 and 5/8" UNF 18 TPI threaded rod in order to weld up the necessary adapter.
FYI- the kit contains the following size adapters for the installation forcing bolt:
Standard:
3/4" UNF 16
7/16" UNF 20
1/2" UNF 20
9/16" UNF 18
5/8" UNF 18
Metric:
M12 x 1.50
M14 x 1.50
M16 x 2.00
All adapters are only 2" long, with 1" devoted to the 5/8" side that threads into the forcing bolt and approximately 1/2" for crank snout. Honestly, these really need to be longer, say 3-4", with about 1" devoted to threading into the crank snout for better purchase and reduced stripping possibility.
