The apotheosis of Ween's helium phase
The Indifference Engine✓ Verified Purchase•August 26, 2017
Ah, Ween's first steps into the wider world came with this pitch-shifted near-pop nugget. You've got less noise than before, and the Ween brothers' voice altering tricks skew closer to Alvin and the Chipmunks than before or since, and only a single foray into free-form noise (Mourning Glory). Pretty much a crossover record disguised as lowbrow comedy and wrapped in the occasional sign of twisted genius.
You've gotta be in the right mood for this record to "click," as it's more unified in tone and musical palette than Ween's characteristic genre chaos. Everything here is light, airy, and pitched into helium-induced giddiness. Take the love-it-or-hate-it single, Push th' Little Daises, a precursor to South Park in sound if not spirit, or the effete rap stylings of The Going' Gets Tough from the Getgo, or the loping mumble-rock of Big Jilm. Pumpin' 4 the Man will be an instant hit with Primus/early Bungle loyalists, and Ween's takes on balladry, prog, and da blooz are amusingly spot-on.
I wouldn't recommend it over The Mollusk or Chocolate and Cheese, but it will satisfy adventurous Ween fans.
