A great intro kite into traction / power

This kite rocks. It was my first foil kite and still my favorite to fly between my 1.2m Thunderfoil, 2.7m HQ Symphony, and 14m HQ Neo. I've flown it since Spring '10 thru now Mar '11 about every other weekend and it's still in great shape. The lines are starting to show very minor signs of use (minor fade on red lead line/slight line fuzz) but other then that it's perfect. I love the lines on this kite. They have this glide wax sort of coating that lets the lines move freely when twisted and keeps them slightly stiff so they stay out of the way of each other. It also makes wrapping up/setting up a breeze. I don't have many kites to compare to but I think it's superb build quality all the way from the bag to the kite killers. Prism is a pretty cool company too. I took it out on a stupid windy day on my second or third try and somehow snapped the bridle lines on one side while basically hanging on for my life with a newbie deathgrip (let go stupid, it has safety line!). I sent them an email and they asked to see it and fixed it for free. Anyways, this kite is indeed powerful so do yourself a favor and don't fly in in high winds until you have some experience. I'm 6'1 190lb and I have to man handle it and take breathers doing loops even in low wind days. That said, it doesn't have quite enough pull at the side of the wind window to get me going on a landboard/snowboard on the lower wind days under 9mph without really working it all over. I haven't been able to do any significant jumps yet either but that could just be in part due to my in-experience/poor technique or general lack of nuggets to try on higher wind days. In short, I'd totally recommend this to anyone looking to give power kiting a go.

Always have loved Prism products!! This is a great entry into power kiting and maybe larger than most ever should start with. Gets up in light winds has good pull... I had mine out in higher winds and was everything I could do to keep myself on the ground!! Its a Lower A/R kite so turns very fast espcially using handles. Completly RTF... However I wish I had found powerkiteforum. first may have chosen smaller or different brand knowing that my addictrive personality would leave me wanting more!!! Brent at Prism was very helpful before I made this purchase and yes this is not my only Power kite.. Hide your wallet after buying this kite you will want MORE. Invest in safety gear and start in light winds espcially if you've never flown power kites or large stunt kites. Check out online how to videos for the do's and don'ts!! I am 6'00" 225lbs and this kite has no problem yanking me off the ground and slamming me back down if i'm not careful!! Bar/handle combo. Great for those intimidated by 4 lines.. in bar mode simple as can be (slow turns) on handles much more mauverable and a lot more fun!! Handles are a little too thick and can fatigue your hands after 30 min flying in brisk wind!! Value for what I spent?? great got deal on mine it was cheaper than the 3.1m Tensor.. Bag is well made. everything you need to fly is included.. Don't forget SAFETY FIRST!! Brace yourself you're in for some fun.
Excellent Kite, Loads of Fun

Prism got me hooked on kiting with their stunters, then introduced me to a bit of power with the Snapshot 2.5. I wanted something that would drag me a little better (I weigh 230#), and wanted to start flying with quadlines. I lusted after this big fella for awhile before talked myself into spending the money.
The Tensor didn't disappoint. The included instruction booklet is comprehensive and straightforward. Control bar-> quadline handle conversion was simple. Construction quality is excellent -- every aspect of the system feels solid and well manufactured. The backpack has enough room for a couple extra kites; I usually lug around a couple of snapshots inside and slide a pair of stunt kites under the straps.
My first flight was a little awkward -- I took it out on a day with nearly no wind, and I had some difficulty keeping it aloft. The safety systems and setup were a little daunting at first, but after a brief adjustment period, everything is fluid and natural.
I've since discovered that (with a little adjustment) the kite will stay aloft in 2-3mph winds, with a fair pull beginning at around 5mph. 8-10mph easily provides enough power to tip me up into my feet from lying on my back. The kite has impressive pull in moderate winds. It handles well; after some practice with the brakelines, it's nearly as agile as my snapshot 2.5 (with half the surface area).
I've attached a nylon tail to it and named it Smaug. It's an excellent kite and loads fun.
Very useable traction kite

Ok, I'm going to review this kite from a few different perspectives, and hopefully it will be helpful.

For starters, I'm 6' 00", and 190lbs. I've been power kiting now for about 2 years, and I've used Prism's 1.5 and 2.5 snapshots. I finally upgraded to this about a year ago.

Overview:

While this can still be considered a "trainer" kite, I would say it's pushing the boundary of trainer, depending on your weight. If you weigh less than 170 or so, this is a full up traction kite that you can use land/snow kiting.
This kite pulls very hard in 12-15 mph, and you will get lifted totally off the ground in 15+. (My biggest air so far was getting lifted about 5 feet off the ground and 25 ft forward. Winds were about 18-20.)

The lines are all solid, and they've taken some abuse over the 100+ times I've flown and they are still going strong. The kite itself is pretty bullet proof, and there are no tears/rips even after crashes and a few trees. (As long as you are methodical in getting it down).

The convertible bar works as advertised, and I've used it both ways several times. You get plenty of control in quad mode, and it's very responsive. The bar can be a bit sluggish for turning, but it's fine for traction sports.
On my kite, the brake lines from the bridle of the kite are a bit long. It took me a while to figure out that I needed to tie the brake lines higher up on the knot ladder, especially in the bar mode. With the bar, I tie the brake lines to the very top knot on the ladder. The quad handles seem to feel right on the second knot, but your mileage may vary.

The kite advertises an adjustable bridle for power control, but I would say this is one of the weak areas of the kite. I've used all 3 power settings in various winds, and honestly, neutral is the most useful setting. That being said, I've been flying on the strong setting for my last few sessions because I'm landboarding now. While it does give you more pull, you make a pretty big tradeoff to steering control. Steering becomes extreme- either very difficult to start a turn at all, or you'll get a sudden turn and get yanked pretty hard. The light pull setting is essentially useless in my experience, turning became almost impossible, and it luffed almost every time it got near the edge of the window.

Steering was only smooth and continuous with a natural pull on the neutral setting.

Speaking of luffing, that's another big complaint I have with this kite. It's not a deal breaker, because it's otherwise very solid, but this kite luffs pretty easily in winds less than 10, and at the edge of the window in any winds.
I actually don't fly this kite unless the wind is 12+, because it's just not fun to constantly be managing it's altitude.

Also, if your intent is to use this kite with a harness, keep in mind you will need to get a kite harness loop (Approx $30) to attach to your control bar, along with whatever harness you purchase.
It is NOT harness ready out of the box. Again, not a deal breaker, but certainly something to be aware of.

Here's my verdict for each group of pilot:

Beginners/looking to upgrade from a smaller kite-
You will have tons of fun with this kite! It's very well made, and all of the components work reliably as advertised. This will pull you harder than any of the smaller parafoils, so definitely learn on it in light winds. The turning isn't very snappy but it's manageable, and it takes more work to stay airborne in winds less than 10-12. However, the massive pull and potential for catching air make it worth it!

If you weigh 170+, this will be a beefy trainer, or good traction kite in 15+ winds.
If you weigh 170 or below, this is really more of a traction kite, and I would start with something a bit smaller if you've never flown before....or start only in light winds for a while until you get used to it.

Kitelandboarders/Snowkiters-
It's a useable kite. It will definitely pull and get you going, but the winds really need to be steady at 15+ to have any fun on the board. Also, the adjustable bridle just isn't executed very well, and you'll probably find yourself staying in one setting most of the time. As I said earlier, the luffing is starting to get irritating after flying this for over a year...but overall I'm still having fun. I am ready to upgrade within the next few months, but this will always be a useful kite in higher winds.
When you do jumps, you really need to be comfortable with controlling your landing, since there is no depower. I've had a few boosts that got a bit tricky when a gust of wind caught me. You just have to ride it out and steer the kite to slow your decent...but it would've been a lot easier with depower. Then again, that's why this kite sells at such a reasonable price.
Tons of fun, Great workout, and very durable

This was my first quad line kite / power kite so take what I say with a grain of salt. Also to give you an idea of the power I am 6'1" 200LBS and athletic

First attempt at flying this the wind was WAY too strong and the area was too small. I had to release it and it got caught on power lines. I pulled a car over climbed on top of a pavilion to get the string off screws on the roof and then pulled the string and the kite came right off the power lines.
I stuffed it into a ball and took it home. It only took about 10 minutes to untangle it and get it ready to fly again.

2nd time I had a big salt flat probably 12 MPH winds and was getting dragged all over the place. It was a blast! I only flew it for about 20-30 minutes and I was sore the next day. Legs and back got a great workout.

Subsequent flights have all been at the salt flat/ lake bed. Its picked me up off the ground a good 6' (on purpose, but very dumb) and will drag me through the flats at about a sprinters pace. I've learned to love the brake lines.
If you have never flown a power kite, I would recommend a smaller one, the 4.2 would probably have been a better choice for me but I make bad decisions. All my friends want to fly it until they see how hard it pulls. I would definitely recommend this to a friend!
