Solder wick
GP1949•August 22, 2017
Completed my list of essentials, for my up and coming project with printed circuit boards of the great Chrysler Town Country 96 they are suffering from under engineering electrical and electronic problems that cause the junkyards of America to be full of these vehicles long before their time. Thank God I have the expertise with the right equipment to affect repairs.
Essential

Does exactly what you want it to do. Saved me quite a few times already! If you're new to soldering like I am, this is a must! Simply press the end of the wick against the solder you want to remove, and then press the tip of the iron against the wick and it'll slurp up the solder! 5 feet will last you a long time since you'll use a few mm each time.
This is A Solder Wick, not THE SolderWick, which I thought was a name brand... Still, disappointing for reasons below.

Unless very careful when trimming used wick, you will end up with little copper "hay" stacks around your bench which can be downright dangerous to unprotected circuits. I just finished up an old roll of Radio Shack SolderWick® that I'd been working off of for years and years and never had anything remotely like "shedding". Even the stuff we had at work (Aerospace "“ Raytheon) was branded (iirc) and always worked well. The only time either of these two would "shed" would be if there was no wicked solder on at least one end. Can't remember any instance where shedding was an issue, and with mil-spec production environments, those little shards wouldn't make for happy times.
I don't recommend. They're not quite a clone, but certainly taking advantage of a well known name.
Can't be bothered to return. Tossed in the recycle bin.

I had a great experience with this wick

I had a great experience with this wick. The braid is a little looser than the 7$ or 8$ braids. However, I found this to actually be helpful when removing solder in tight places. The braid would quickly take the shape of a corner, perhaps, as the strands would start to open up a bit. With good conductivity with the iron, I could see the rosin start to smoke and then the solder would simply get "wicked" up. I have burned out and/or lifted a lot of pads while desoldering in the past. I did not lose one single pad using this wick. The tighter wicks are just too difficult for me to work with, and thus I overheat and destroy the joint (jumper wire time). Not with this stuff. At least for me, anyhow. :-)
Loose Weave

Does not keep a tight weave, the braid is too loose, look for a higher quality brand for desoldering!
