I really wanted to give this less stars, but....I didn't. Let me explain.
The drum itself is of descent quality given the price. I wasn't expecting any more or any less, which is why I gave 4 stars. What I found extremely disappointing was it's a Celtic drum, made in Pakistan, and sold out of San Francisco. Talk about globalization. As I learn to play it, I will probably look for a better quality one made and sold in Ireland so I can get a more authentic feel.

As beginner I figured an original Bodhran was what I should get. Trying to learn to play something completely new this drums circumference is just too large for Me to place under My arm and maintain control. It's well made frame and skin are good. It can not be manually tuned so the skin sound can change easily with humidity. A skilled player would enjoy it. It came with a tipper ( stick ).

I have a love/hate relationship with this drum. I purchased it as a Christmas gift for my husband, who is from north Dublin. He has no previous experience with percussion instruments, but likes trad music and has been curious about the bodhran for some time. "Oh," I thought, "This will be a fun surprise for him." LITTLE DID I KNOW.
He loved it. Loved it! And now, he plays it INCESSANTLY. He plays it in the morning, while I get ready. He takes it to work with him and plays. He plays while I cook dinner. He marches with it around our yard. He said to me, AND I QUOTE, "This bodhran was a better gift than the PS4." This drum! Better than a Playstation!
In his defense, he has improved in incredible leaps and bounds since Christmas. For someone with no previous experience, he is advancing quickly. But he is also driving me insane. So, the love/hate factor -- this drum makes me nuts, but it also makes him (almost deliriously) happy, which was the whole point. So, I do recommend it without reservation. Just, maybe also get some earplugs or something.

I bought this based on previous reviews written by other buyers. This drum carries good tonal qualities and I like the simplicity and green finish. More than likely it would be a good idea to tape the head as Bodhran makers/players recommend, to really drive home the bass.
