African Grey LOVES it! Easy to modify recipe
Mackenzie MalpassJanuary 11, 2018
I can't say enough positive things about this mix! Harrison's is a great company to begin with, but the bird bread is really great for the price and usability of it. The original flavor is the way to go in my opinion, especially since you can add pretty much whatever you like to change up the flavor.

My Congo grey, Pixel, is a snacky bird, so he eats pretty much anything, but this is a great way to get a picky bird to consume calcium supplements, pellets, or other veggies. The mix by itself is kind of bland and Pix doesn't like the taste much, so I usually add a splash of maple syrup to make it a bit sweeter. I also chop up his pellets (which he eats alone for breakfast, but begrudgingly) and put them in for some extra vitamins.

As far as other ingredients, you can put a ton of extra stuff in (as you can see in the pictures) without the batter getting too thick. The bread bakes very dense as is anyway, since there is no yeast or rising flour; I find that it makes it easier for birds to hold in their little foot and they drop less of it. I would NOT recommend putting in a ton of extra liquid... It makes it too mushy. The autumn themed bread (see pics) I made had pumpkin puree, but it would fall apart a lot after baking. My usual recipe has nuts, peppers (baby bells and serranos,) dried berries, bananas, chiffonaded kale/spinach, cilantro, pellets, maple syrup, vanilla extract, apples, etc. You can add any of your bird's favorite veggies.

Storing is easy-- I cut up the bread into 7-8 chunks and freeze them in the bag it came in. One chunk = one week, thaw and break a piece off each day.

Overall, the mix is great, and if you're on the fence about it, I'd say go for it! It's about $13, so you're not spending a huge fortune, and if your bird doesn't like it, you can give it to the squirrels. The original flavor is mild enough to where your bird will eat it for the goodies you add, not just the batter itself, I've found. It also makes a great completely-edible foraging snack!
Some of the best bird food available.

Harrisons pellet food is one of the best ones you can get your bird to eat. Some birds really don't like it at first though, so mixing a bit in with this bread mix is a good way to get them to eventually switch to the pellets. Just make this with a couple handfuls of pellets in it and offer it as a treat/snack every day. They will gradually start eating the pellets more often. Worked for my conure that would only eat seeds (which is not healthy and can eventually cause liver disease if I recall correctly)
so far so good. Thank you

I thought my budgie would never eat anything but seed. He even ignored the bird bread at first. Just when I was about to give up, he started to devour the bird bread and he cannot get enough of it. I'm hoping this will make my conversion to Harrison's a success... so far so good. Thank you.
Might be better with some fruits, nuts, veggies added.

I used to bake a bird bread mix that I got from a vet in Florida so thought I'd try this one. I am persistent and keep taking a muffin of this out of the freezer then store it in the fridge, pinch off a part and warm for a minute in the toaster oven, but my bird just takes a nibble and tosses it. Ugggggh!
If I ever decided to try it again, I think I would add some nuts, veggies etc before baking. Sure sounds nutritious so I'm pretty disappointed for now.
Healthy bird snack

My macaw loves this as a nighttime snack before bed. The best part about it is that it is healthy for her to have and you can add other things like fruits and vegetables to it that they wouldn't normally eat alone. After making this batch I cut into small squares then put back into the package and into the freezer. Easy to warm up one piece at a time.
