Alaska tested
MeMarch 9, 2018
Took it on a backpacking trip to Alaska. Actually carried it as my personal item on the plane cause it was a little heavy and big for the checked baggage since we only wanted to pay for one checked bag. Used the manufacturer recommended footprint and worked great with leaves, pine needles, and sticks underneath. Plenty of room for 2 dudes and a goldendopdle to sleep inside. Packs were hanging on branches outside. Didn't use the rain fly. Having two separate doors was awesome so you dont have to climb over anyone. Didn't use the rain fly but I have set it up with just the footprint, poles, and rainfly in the backyard. I guess you could use it that way if you wanted to go even lighter. I tried some cheaper tents but they were too short for 6'. Unless you like spending money on brand-name equipment, buy this one and save a couple hundred
Absolutely love this tent!!

Went on 4 backpacking trips in the US. This tent is perfect for the soloist or a team. Nice amount of room, very light and pack able. I love the canopy it provides with the rain fly to protect your pack and boots or whatever gear you want to leave outside the tent close by. Very good ventilation and strong construction. If you shop REI ask them about this tent, the 3 shops I went to were surprised at the price and speak highly of this tent.

Edit: the pics on the dock. I was treating the tent with permethrin spray. Excellent stuff if you don't want to be bothered with ticks, spiders or mosquitoes. Spray it on the outer clothes you plan on wearing and spend a week in the wilderness without worry.
Going strong (and dry) since 2014!

I got this tent a couple of years ago out of sheer necessity because I had a spur-of-the-moment 25+ mile backpacking trip coming up on the AT and I lost my Kelty tent during a move. I didn't have the time or the money to throw at a new $400 tent, so I ordered this one basically on a whim. I can honestly say this is easily one of the best tents I've used out on the trail and at a quarter of the price of one of the "higher end" tents.

Pros/features:
- Double-sided egress/ingress. No crawling over equipment or people to get in or out of the tent.
- Bathtub flooring and seems make this tent is a boat in heavy rain after a little after-market waterproofing (spray, seam sealer). I was in it during what I can only assume was a micro-burst downpour when I was at Kentucky Lake and didn't get one molecule of water in the interior, even with the rain fly vents open.
- It's sturdy against heavy wind if set-up, guyline-d, and positioned properly.
- Great ventilation even when the rain fly is attached.
- There are storage pockets on every corner of the interior and an overhead net attachment for extra storage or for a light source.
- There is SO MUCH ROOM inside. I'm 6'0 and am able to sprawl-out even with a jam-packed 70L Osprey pack next to me.
- It's really well insulated. Slept right through a freak snow fall on the AT in Georgia without so much as a shiver and didn't even realize the tent was caked in snow until I tried to unzip the fly.
- Pitching and breakdown are super easy and quick. Color coded poles and grommets take the "math" out of setting-up. With a little practice, this tent can be sleep ready in less than 6-7 minutes, if you're in a hurry.

Cons:
- The weight. This tent perfect for short over-nights or car camping and even the occasional section hike. But I don't see myself taking this on any kind of extended thru-hike. The trail weight on the specs indicate 4lb 12oz, but I think that's being a little generous. I can maybe see it getting close to that if you really trimmed down the guylines and went bare bones with only the tent, poles, rain fly and minimum-to-no ultralight stakes, but at that point you're sacrificing structural integrity and water resistance (just my opinion). I also use a footprint just to keep the floor from getting chewed-up on roots and rocks, etc. which can compound on the weight issue.

- Re-packing. Like most tents, once this one comes out of that sleek pristine bag for the first time, you will NEVER get it back to that shape/size again. I've started packing the poles and stakes separately from the tent just because it feels like I'm going to tear either the tent or the bag when trying to shove it back in there (Not a huge deal; it can actually help distribute the weight and allow for further compression of the bag). Again, this is not abnormal for most tents, but it's still kind of a hassle if you're trying to do it with frozen fingers or if you're in a hurry.

Overall, this tent is outstanding. I highly recommend it. You get WAY more than what you pay for. I'm still probably going to invest in a lighter, more "specialized" tent for my more serious hikes where every ounce counts, but this one will be the one I keep in the car as my go-to for everything else.
It's almost everything I wanted

I bought this tent because I believe it's a reliable brand that stands behind its product, it was advertised as being very easy to erect, it had flexible aluminium poles which are superior in many ways to fiberglass, and it advertised good quality zippers (a particular fetish with me). I've backpacked a number of times, with several tents, though I wouldn't call myself hard-core. I'm getting up in age, and only have the use of one hand, so easy assembly is important. So far, I've only put it together at home. Next week, it gets a serious trial in the mountains, and I'll give you an update.
PROS
- Incredibly easy to erect. The color coding sounded unnecessary, but is actually a good idea. 2nd time around, I assembled it in 3 minutes.
- Unusually long, so most people could put a backpack at the end of their sleeping bag.
- The stuff/storage sack is generously sized. You don't have to spend 20 min. rolling the tent up super-tight.
- The zippers look sturdy.
ODDITIES
- I suppose the vestibule is the area under the flysheet if you peg the flaps open at 45 degrees to the tent wall. However, there's no groundsheet/footprint under this area.
- the 2 doors have a mesh upper part, with a zip-up solid cover. Why? The end walls of the tent have mesh upper parts, with no covering flaps. If you want to be rainproof, you HAVE to add the flysheet.
- 2 doors, with corresponding openings in the flysheet.. Why? I suppose that, given the fact that the tent is a squeeze for 2 adults, it may be useful if one needs to use the bathroom in the night :-)
CONS
- The plastic clips holding the flysheet down, and attaching the tent to the poles are flimsy. This is not an area to save a couple of ounces of weight.
- Weight in backpacking trim is 5 lb 9 oz. The only way you might get down to the 4 lb 12 oz "trail weight" is to omit the flysheet, which you could only do in a location that's warm at night and guaranteed to have no rain.
- The 92" x 56" floor dimensions require a bit of stretching to get there. However, I think that's normal for advertised sizes. What it means, though, is that the width is only OK for two good friends. Heaven help you if one is a restless sleeper.
UPDATE
The tent remains a joy to erect. The pegs are great. The tent would have been thoroughly waterproof in moderate rain IF I'd installed the flysheet properly. I wasn't expecting rain, so I just attached it by the corner clips. You have to use four pegs to hold it away from the tent walls, otherwise the flysheet and tent fabric will come together, and the inside of the tent walls will be damp. The door zips are excellent, and don't need the remaining pieces of fabric to be aligned at all before zipping them closed.
Excellent backpacking tent.

I am updating my review now that I have used this on a wide variety of trips in different environments and terrains.

I have used this on single day and multi-day trips. In the rain, in the snow, in the dusty low desert & in the cool high mountains. I have used this free standing on rock ledges without the fly and in soft soil with the fly. I have used this in 100 degree heat and below freezing cold. I have no complaints about it's ability to handle most normal weather conditions. I have used this solo with my gear inside, and shared it with another adult with plenty of room for us to maneuver comfortably with our gear in the vestibules. Two doors is a definite plus in this situation. Honestly I can't say enough good things about this tent. For the price, you can not find a more versatile tent.

I purchased this tent specifically for my first backpacking trip and have used it many times since, and have always been happy. Only after ten+ camping trips with this tent am I ready to move on to a different model, but I will still be keeping and using this tent for other adventures. My biggest desire for this tent would be lighter weight. I am venturing more into Ultralight backpacking and would like something half the weight. But, with a partner, one could split the tent and poles, fly, and footprint to achieve that result.

Excellent value. Quality construction. Quick setup.
