Correct replacement for your aluminum scoop shovel
Doozer✓ Verified PurchaseJuly 19, 2023
Replaces the broken d-handle on your aluminum scoop shovel. Yeah, the one you use to scoop grain or snow! These are the real thing: stout & well made.

The inside diameter of the poly handle is 1-1/4". The outside diameter of my scoop shovel wood handle is 1-1/4". But the poly handle would not fit on the wood handle. Lions & tigers, oh no! Well, buck up! You should expect to have to modify a wooden handle every time you replace the handle! This is no different.

While methods may vary, this method has consistently provided good results. I clamp a belt sander to a bench & evenly remove wood from the wood handle until the wood handle just fits into the tool or in this case, the d-handle. It needs to be sanded evenly & checked often. When it fits tight & you can pound it in place, you're done. Measure the depth & mark it on the wood so you insert it fully. Add 2 round head screws & start your shovel! An angle grinder will work. A wood rasp or coarse sandpaper will work. So will a sharp knife (please not a steak knife!). Just be prepared to remove material from your wood handle.

I bought 2 because I wanted a d-handle on my snow pusher also. It was always tough to cast snow with this shovel because of the long handle. In a previous life, I was a pipelayer & we used short-handled shovels with d-handles because they were easier to use & gave the laborer more control. To that end, I figured that a d-handle on this shovel would make for a better tool. Same procedure as above.

Note that these are poly handles, not plastic. Poly refers to HDPE which is more resistant to cracking than some plastics like PVC, especially in extreme cold. That's why the plastic ones are cheaper, but are not as well suited to this task & after all that, do you want to do this all over again?

But then again, I'm just a FOG & what do I know?

I had a Super Heavy-Duty Fiberglass Drain Spade nearly impossible to break but the handle gave out or got run over. I kept that shovel around for years in my garage until I found this on Amazon It fit perfectly and I use it again all the time. Digging is super awesome exercise and a builds skill. This handle returned my useless shovel to like-new again condition.

I bought this handle to replace a broken handle on one of our 3 snow shovels. The shovels weren't anything special or expensive, but sometimes any money saved is a good thing. The handle replacement would have been cheaper than replacing the whole shovel.

When attaching, I found the opening for where the handle attaches to the pole to be a little too big... but that's my own fault (not very accurate measuring of the pole diameter.) A little bit of spacer material fixed that issue right up (I wrapped a ribbon of velcro around the pole to take some of that "slop" out.)

The handle itself is high quality, and seems very durable. Its a heck of a lot more heavy-duty than the original handle on the snow shovel.

Ive found that the family uses the shovel with this handle on it more often than the shovels with the original handles. I'd say that makes this one a winner.
Like A New Snow Shovel in Five Minutes

Why am I repairing my snow shovel in August? I used to be such an optimist pre-COVID. THIS D handle is far more rugged than the plastic one that broke two winters ago. I unraveled the old duct tape semi-holding the old busted handle, slipped this on, drilled a hole, and inserted the retaining screw. Five minutes and I have a new shovel. Now I can watch the weather report with confidence.
