I've never ice fished but my son wanted to try. I bought this and we used it last week to drill many holes is about 17 inches of ice in northern wisconsin. I was shocked at how easily this thing went through the ice, under a minute per hole. I found it easiest to get the hole started then put a little weight on the top of the handle with one hand while turning with the other.

Out of the box this thing was sharp and it cut ice like butter. It bound slightly a few times but I just kept turning and tilt the auger a bit until it dug in again then started cutting and kicking up shaved ice. Went through 10" of ice in under 30 seconds I estimate and I'm a novice. I purchased the 8" wide auger. I had a tried a 6" wide used auger before this and it would not cut no matter what I did even after shimming the blades four times which felt sharp so this was a blessing and a steal for the roughly $50 paid. I have a fish pond in MN and I have to vent it every few days so the amonia gases can escape from the decaying leaves on the bottom or all my fish could die. This works super good for that purpose.
