My experience so far with this fire safe is so-so. I too immediately noticed the cheap locking mechanisms that other reviews have documented. The two clasps on either side of the safe are a cheap plastic, that clamp down with the aid of a cheap plastic spring that (on the right side) was bent upon delivery. Clamping down those handles is still doable with some finagling.
The safe was "locked" on delivery, but the latch that locks the chest was not in the slot it was supposed to be in that would keep it secure. Instead, it's as though the key put the safe's latch in the "locked" position while it was fully open, then downward pressure from the chest's lid drove the locking latch into the plastic of the lid, putting a nice dent in the lid. The result is that the chest will not securely lock.
For my purposes, the safe doesn't have to lock, and it accomplishes what I need it to, so I'm keeping the safe, lesson learned: You get what you pay for.

Disappointing for a household brand like Honeywell

For such a well know brand like Honeywell, this is deeply disappointing. First the box is immensely heavy but that can be expected for a fireproof product. I could then, not find the keys as it was hidden behind some wrapping material. Once I did and installed the wheels, the key broke inside the lock. It's an extremely flimsy key. If there is a fire, there is no way this lock will survive thereby putting the contents of the box in question.

same story as someone else posted. the key got stuck and now the thing is worthless. honeywell asked that reviewer to contact them, to resolve his problem, assured him the warranty covers this. so we tried it. they just say it's up to amazon to fix this. too big and heavy to get a return. absurdly heavy. some of these units probably work OK (if you don't mind airing them out every week), but it's a gamble. if yours doesn't, you just threw the money out the window. there's nothing anyone's gonna do about it.
if the goal is to protect stuff from fires and floods, you might be better off with a safety deposit box. there seems no good home solution for this.

A large and heavy plastic box

The unit is heavy.It weighs 90 pounds. It will mildew your papers if not opened at least every 10 days. The latches so far I have not figured out and they do not seem to serve a function although they are latched in the picture. The key turns hard. It is slow closing at the end to avoid crushing your fingers. The first one arrived broken, cracked and dented. The second one latches through use of the key but the plastic latches are not usable and appear broken. They are flimsy, made of plastic and easily broken. Mine arrived not usable. I tried customer service and was advised to leave a number and they would "call me back". Well I'm waiting, and waiting....

After doing a ton of research, this is what i went with. It weighs a ton and seems super solid. But we also had an issue with delivery. somehow when it came, the corner was cracked and one of the latches was broken. I don't know how they store these things but this seems to happen a lot and defeats the purpose of it being fireproof. The latches are very very cheap and could break very easily. Overall though it is very solid but some of the basic parts need serious work.
