Strikes the ferro rod very nicely!
William EakerOctober 18, 2016
I use these as strikers for my ferro rods. I took the rubber handle off and replaced it with copper pins and osage orange scales. The metal in the handle is soft enough to drill holes for the pins. Strikes the ferro rod very nicely!

Short answer buy the Speedy Sharp if you are wanting this type of device. Long answer : No real reason to be brand loyal, the lettering wore off immediately. There is no lanyard hole in the plastic (there is one in the metal underneath the rubber sleeve). Compared to the Speedy Sharp the carbide section is less polished, and may be a reason it does not perform as efficiently as other similar tools. This tool functions well and is sufficient but inferior to the Speedy Sharp. The cost difference between the EZE-LAP and Speedy Sharp was less than $4. If you are going to use this as a fire-steel striker, also a reason to get the Speedy; however, the Speedy is very aggressive and will shave down the fire-steel very quickly. This tool was not aggressive enough and could not produce sparks where the Speedy and other purpose built fire-steel strikers would. That is a disqualifying event for this tool as a camp tool for fire starting. If you just want a tool to sharpen shears, hatchets, and blades this does a good job and the less aggressive nature may be a bonus here as it will be less damaging during the learning curve.

EDIT - I spent less than a minute running the main face over a fine diamond stone by the same manufacturer. The performance increased greatly, but I will still keep my rating as is. The out of the box performance was disappointing compared to both the more expensive Speedy Sharp and a similar product picked up at my local home center for $5.
