Great tool but needs a little refining for the price.

I have been debating getting a domino for a long time but most of my work is done with pocket screws to save time. I honestly didn't see a realistic used for the domino in my cabinet shop. I do outsource my door fronts and decided to purchase a domino for building small orders of doors. It works well to build shaker doors however the longer I have it the more uses I find for it such a stair railing finish carpentry and joining items where I cannot have a fastener seen. It's very easy to use and there are a few things I've used it for such as stair railing"˜s that would not have been possible to do with any other joint. It has definitely paid for itself in the shop my only issue with it is the fence drift. When joining two flat pieces of material together you can get some fence drift and will have lipage during your glue up. Yes you can buy an aftermarket machined aluminum fence from Seneca woodworking that will definitely help with this. However for a $1300 premium joining tool there should be absolutely zero need to buy an aftermarket accessory to make it work better.
Now comes the classic debate whether or not you're going to get the 700 or the 500 I found myself in the same spot. I can honestly say if your not working with 1-1/2" or larger material constantly the 700 will be overkill.
Yes you can buy an adapter to run the smaller bits but the 700 is to cumbersome in my opinion to use consistently with smaller joints and dominos. I nearly got the 700 several times. But I can say I'm happy I went with the 500. I rarely use a 10mm domino. Mostly the 5 and 6mm.
I hope this helps you make a decision.

Perfect? No Expensive? Very Should you buy it? If you can afford it, YES!

This was a tough purchase decision because of the high price and my previous experience with Festool products hasn't been great. More on that later.
This machine makes fast, acuurate and repeatable cuts thanks to the spacer tabs and guides included with this set. While it is not difficult to use there are a few quirks so definitely read the manual first so you don't risk screwing up your very expensive tool. Speaking of expense it is worth noting that you only get the 5mm cutter with this set. To get the most out of it you will need to purchase the 4,6,8 and 10mm cutters. The combo pack that gets you these cutters and a tenon assortment will set you back another few hundred dollars so all in you will be dropping close to $1,500. It ain't inexpensive but it is a unique and versatile machine that can boost shop efficiency enough to justify the price tag. In addition to making great loose tenon joints their connector kit adds extra utility for anyone who makes knock down furniture. The connectors are brilliant and put every other ready to assemble fastener system to shame.
While I find the overall design to be very good I do have some gripes. The power switch feels flimsy and looks like it would be more at home on an off brand angle grinder than on a $1,000 dollar "premium" tool. This leads right into the second issue and that is the fairly soft return spring. If you are not careful it is very easy to push the cutter into the workpiece while pressing the power switch on so it is best to lock power switch on before placing machine on the workpiece. Even then it is necessary to excercise caution when placing the machine, accidently press too hard on the handle and you can end up cutting into the workpiece. This is why I would prefer a paddle switch. Complaint number three is the ridiculous removable power cord. Festool fanboys will argue this is a brilliant feature since you only need to plug in the one power cord and simply swap it from your Domino to your sander or whatever other tool you may be using. Makes perfect sense if you have a shop full of Festool brand tools but back in the real world where most of us have a shop full of various brands it is a useless feature. Just one more thing to have to attach and one more potential failure point. Given Festool's tendency to use some components of dubious quality I would prefer a permanently attached cord to avoid a potential failure.
Complaints aside I really do like the Domino. After a couple weeks I have gotten used to its quirks and it has improved my efficiency. Durability is a question mark. My only other experience with Festool is a sander that pooped out in short order so I am not sold on Festool build quality. It doesn't help that the body of the Domino resembles a twenty dollar Chinese angle grinder. Thankfully it has a decent warranty.
Update Aug 2019.
After about 8 months of fairly light use I got the chance to experience Festool's warranty service. That cheap Horror Freight style power switch failed as did the motor. The good news it their warranty service is excellent. Went to their website, filled out the service form and they provided a shipping label. Simple and painless. They ain't kidding about their 2 day repair time. Based on UPS tracking info my Domino was in their hands for less than 48 hours. This kind of service certainly helps justify the hefty price.

Mortices, mortices everywhere

This thing is amazing. I am making mortices in everything. At all sorts of crazy angles. It is accurate, makes no dust, and is really fun. My various router jigs for making mortices are now gathering dust (which, to be clear, is not coming from the domino).
Festool is well worth it!
